Man Utd Offer South American £8.1m-A-Year Contract To Make £18m Deadline Day Move

Manchester United have offered to trigger Diego Godin’s £18m release clause and pay him £8.1m-per-season but the defender is set to stay at Atletico Madrid

The summer transfer deadline day has arrived and managers are working hard to secure last minute deals so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Manchester United have made a stunning late move for Diego Godin…

Manchester United have offered to trigger Diego Godin’s £18m release clause and pay him £8.1m-per-season but the defender is set to stay at Atletico Madrid, according to ESPN.

United boss Jose Mourinho is desperately scouring the market for a top class centre-back during the final hours of the window and has so far been frustrated in his attempts to sign the likes of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng in recent weeks.

It seems Man Utd have also made an audacious attempt to sign Godin as ESPN are one of several outlets reporting they have made it clear to Atletico Madrid they are willing to meet the defender’s £18m release clause.

The report claims United also offered to double Godin’s wages to £8.1m-per-season after tax but unfortunately they have not been given any encouragement that a deal can be done before today’s 5pm deadline.

The 32-year-old has been one of the best central defenders in world football since joining Atletico from Villarreal in 2010 and he was once again a star performer for Uruguay at the World Cup this summer.

Godin appears settled in Spain and ESPN suggest the South American is more likely to sign a new contract at the Metropolitano Stadium than to push for a late move to Old Trafford during the closing stages of the window.

Obviously Godin would be a superb short-term addition if United were able to pull it off but it’s looking highly unlikely unless things take a drastic change over the next couple of hours.

Mourinho admitted earlier today he wasn’t confident of making any more signings so United may have to settle for the squad they’ve already got having signed Brazilian midfielder Fred, third-choice keeper Lee Grant and young full-back Diogo Dalot earlier in the summer.
