Manchester United expect David De Gea to sign a new long-term contract that will see him become the Premier League’s top earning goalkeeper on over £10m-per-season, according to the Daily Mail.

De Gea has developed in to arguably the best goalkeeper on the planet since joining Man Utd from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and his importance to the team has been highlighted by the fact he’s won their Player of the Year award in four of the last five seasons.

The 27-year-old’s ability hasn’t gone unnoticed in Spain as De Gea saw a proposed switch to Real Madrid in 2015 famously collapse at the last second due to a faulty fax machine and he’s been constantly linked with a move back to his homeland over the years.

However, United fans breathed a huge sigh of relief when Madrid splashed out £32m on the signing of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea last week as it’s now highly unlikely the European champions will come calling for De Gea again any time soon.

The Daily Mail claim that Madrid decided to move for Courtois after being given very little encouragement that De Gea wanted to leave Old Trafford as he’s now content in Manchester and enjoys a solid relationship with Jose Mourinho and his staff.

But there is still a question mark over De Gea’s long-term future as he’s in the final year of his contract and although United have the option to trigger a clause extending the deal until 2020, the club are understandably desperate to tie him down to a long-term extension.

There could be positive news soon as the newspaper says United sources expect the Spanish international to sign a new deal worth over £200,000-a-week [£10.4m-per-season] to make De Gea the highest paid keeper in the Premier League.

It would be a major boost for the Manchester giants to see De Gea commit his future to Old Trafford and he’d be in-line for a testimonial if he stayed beyond the 2021-22 campaign as he would have completed 10 years at the club.
