Manchester United failed in their attempts to sign Alex Sandro this summer after struggling to meet Juventus’s £54m asking price due to budget restrictions, according to reports via TeamTalk.

Jose Mourinho was left frustrated by United’s lack of transfer activity this summer as the Portuguese coach saw the club miss out on a number of his top targets including the likes of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Willian and Ivan Perisic.

Left-back was also an area Mourinho was keen to strengthen as he looks to find a long-term replacement for 33-year-old Ashley Young and Sandro was widely touted to be a prime target for United in recent months.

TeamTalk reported last month that Man Utd had agreed personal terms with Sandro over a potential move to Old Trafford but were struggling to come to an agreement with Juve over a fee for the Brazilian international.

A move failed to materialise in the end and TeamTalk are now citing a report from the Manchester Evening News that claims the reason a deal wasn’t reached is that United refused to meet Juve’s £54m valuation.

The report says that although Mourinho was keen to bring the Sandro in as his new left-back this season, he was forced to end his pursuit as United chiefs didn’t want to break their strict budget.

United are one of the wealthiest clubs in the world and they no doubt had the finances available to pay £54m if they wanted but the powers that be decided Sandro was outside the budget they had set aside for a new left-back.

In the end, Fred was the only significant new arrival at Old Trafford this summer as Lee Grant was brought in as a third choice goalkeeper while Diogo Dalot is a young full-back for the future.

Mourinho has now given Luke Shaw another chance to resurrect his career with the former Southampton ace hoping to nail down the left-back position after enduring a frustrating time since joining the club four years ago.
