Fernando Torres: A Flop?

By on February 16, 2011

Carlo Ancelotti has said that he expects Fernando Torres to come good within a few matches. For anybody who saw the match against Fulham, it was a glimpse of the best of Fernando Torres that Chelsea paid £50 million for. Yes, he did not score any goals and in fact, he missed a few sitters . However, his performance came against Fulham in a very tight match. There was certainly not a great deal of joy for strikers of both teams. It was much better than the performance against Liverpool, where he was simply non-existent. How long will it take Torres to get back to his old self with Chelsea? It is difficult to answer given that Chelsea are in the middle of the season fighting for the fourth place with Tottenham.

So, there is every possibility that Ancelotti will not be willing to jeopardise his team’s place in the top four just for the sake of integrating both Torres and Didier Drogba into the same team. One should certainly not be surprised if any of the front three of Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres and Nicolas Anelka found themselves on the bench. It is highly unlikely that Ancelotti will be putting Torres in the substitute bench mainly because of the exorbitant fee that he has cost Chelsea. So, it is going to be either Didier Drogba or Nicolas Anelka who will have to make way for the Spaniard.

The sooner that Fernando Torres starts scoring goals, will be the better for him and the club, as the talk has already begun about Torres being a flop. Chelsea have already had the experience of a big signing becoming a flop in the form of Andrei Shevchenko, but there is a feeling that Fernando Torres will not go down the same route.

    Fernando Torres: A Flop?

Who on earth asks a question like this after a player has only played 2 games

    • WalkingAlone

      February 16, 2011 at 9:54 am

He’s been a flop for more than 2 games, fella.
He’s been poor for at least 18 months, ironically including a very poor (albeit winning) World Cup campaign!
      The more pertinent question is:
Were Liverpool a flop because of him!!!??

        February 16, 2011 at 11:23 am

No mate, Liverpool were a flop because they are a very poor side with just a couple of decent players.

11 men behind the ball at Stamford Bridge worked well for you, sure, but you got lucky with the win.

Concentrate on the £35m binman that you just signed, and your failure to beat Wigan at home.

You burn your own shirt, you burn your own shiiiiirts, feckin idiots, you burn your own shirts!

The score should have been 2-0 against your bunch of fornicating coke-sniffers. You barely had a chance to score and we played you off the park!

You had one shot on target…one… what a joke of a performance from a joke of a team.

I’m glad torres has left, he can sit on the bench with Anelka and they can sulk together. He’ll be on his way in a season or two anyway once Terry gets his leg over his wife.

Can’t wait for Abramovich to leave you lot in the lurch with massive debt and the financial structure of a girlscouts brownie stand. Then I suppose you’ll all become Man U fans…

Remind me again, did we do the double over you this year? Yes… yes we did… We may suffer a few problems with consistency (like you are at the moment – Fulham should have wiped the floor with you on Monday) but on our day we are the far superior side.

Was this the same Fulham who didn’t get out of their own half until injury time?

Your a shambles mate, like your idiotic shirt burning, moronic fans!

How many trophies have you won in the last ten years again…. (cue, history, blah, blah)…

To the pupsplums…Lol, you are a fornicating baboon mate! Been to every ground in England and chelsea fans are without doubt the most ill educated when it comes to footy. Last time I went to stamford bridge it was like an estates agents convention with all the suits! Ten minutes into the game you were all singing ‘bring back mouriniho’ and slagging your own team as you were losing. Plastic flags to try and generate an atmosphere at euro games!!..positively laughable. You my friend are a giant cock!

Yes, that’s right. Blame Torres for Liverpool’s failures. Never mind that before he left, Liverpool were essentially a two-man team ; Tores and Gerrard – and any dip in form for either or both of them was magnified by the ineptitude of the rest of the team. How about sorting out the severe lack of depth in the team before blaming the guy who finally wised up and left?

          February 16, 2011 at 4:06 pm

Liverpool a two man team, It was proven Liverpool hvae won More PL Points, with Gerrard out the Squad than with him in it, yeah we struggle for ideas sometimes when he doesnt play, but don’t say were a two man team, Liverpool aren’t yes they may soetime over rely on certain players, but those days are looking to come to an end!… and saying he wised up and went to a team who the first team most over 30.. Chelsea wont win anything this season… he should of gone to arsenal or abroad for trophies!

In honesty, I do hope he comes good for his own sake. However he really hasn’t been the striker we bought for over a year.

Stupid headline and pointless article. As a Scouser and Liverpool supporter, I was saddened to lose such a gifted player. His departure sourered his relationship with my club, but did nothing to his immense skills. He is the best forward on the planet. Whether he will show the same talent with Chelsea remains to be seen, but he should, no problem.

what a flop! 2 games and he hasnt scored…waste of money. lets forget that he has signed for the next 5 years.
Ramires was useless for the first few months, drogba and malouda did set the premiership alight at the start of their chelsea careers. Stupid article written by a moron who doesn’t have a clue about football

Another poor article from a poor website about a player who is a flop after less than 2 hours of football….ZZZZZzzzzz!

The boy is world class and is s surefire smash hit for the blues.

Shirt sales alone will pay for his transfer, so it is a real no-brainer.

Talk about Torres being a flop is ridiculous. Not just because it’s far too early to jump to conclusions but because we all know the man is as good as it gets. He’s had a dip in form of late but the cream rises to the top eventually.

And Chelsea will not bemoaning his transfer fee anytime soon; sales of his No 9 shirts will more than make up for it!

Its funny how just a few months back, Chelsea fans were having themselves a good laught at Torres because of his shitty performances, btu as soon as he signs he is called world class. Torres is a great player and i have always thought that and you cant judge a player after playign two games for a new club with a different approach to football. I have no doubt that Torres will come right but for all those Chelsea fans who changed their opinions in a night abotu Torres..shut it coz your biased opinion is bullshit.
I just read a comment from soem chelsea fan saying Liverpool were lucky when they beat Cheslea…Yeh right shows how biased your opinions are..stop talking shit mate.. Liverpool deserved the three points.
Torres will be good for Chelsea but i dont know wehether he will recapture his best from the one that saw him banging goals left right and centre for Pool in his first two years.
Personally i didnt want to lose Torres but we came out better and we looking like a stronger team with our two top notch strikers . We looking better and our young strikers are hungry.
Glad we replaced Nando with two greta young strikers. They will so way better than Torres

Am a Liverpool fan an torres on form is unplayable best striker In world his form will come bk but i thing his injure prone an a think wiv got best deal suarez an Carroll for torres

    • ThePupsPLums

      February 16, 2011 at 12:23 pm

      Injury prone?

He’s played every game for Liverpool this season, up until he left. Has he not?

      • Flago Gago!

        February 16, 2011 at 4:09 pm

not every game he never played the european games or the mid-week games, but just because he played every game doesnt mean he is not injury prone, his injury record says it is, he does his hamstring he is just as good as finished, because he be like owen and be afraid to step on the gas, incase he does it all over again!… its not what i or any football fan wants, wish him all thes best of luck, but wish none of it on chelsea!

      • mark

        March 8, 2011 at 4:49 pm

        2 abductor tears
        3 hamstring strains
        damagesd calf muscle
total time out over last 3 seasons
        17 weeks
tells you all you need to know about torres injury problems
but he is still a world class player but he is 27 next year and he is a stricker like owen and depends on his pace alot to beat defenders so i give him two to three years of a prime left
and liverpool would of rocketed up the table if torres and suarez was up front but ahh well

Torres ceased to be the worlds best striker over a year ago. However, he was used to being top dog at Liverpool, but will now be swamped by the huge collection of over-inflated egos at Chavski. He won’t survive with a bunch of preening prima-donnas to compete with in teh same team. Mindlessly flashing the cash does not build a coherent football team and it is worrying that the Chavski fans are more concerend abotu the shirts Torres will sell than the goals he will score. No history, no integrity and no class – nothing changes at Stamford Bridge.

    February 16, 2011 at 12:50 pm

He has been a flop for the past 18 months including the world-cup

Sure LFC suffered last season and this season due to his lack of goals. LFC were bad, but Toserr’s poor performance and disnterested body language (which was also noticeable against Fulham) played a huge part in Rafa’s downfall and potentialls Woys too.

      February 16, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Don’t chat rubbish, his movement was great against Fulham, he just needs a few games to get his touch back to scratch. He is playing with a better group of players, our system wont work overnight. Lampard/Essien/? thats the position we really needed to fill, serious lack of creativity in the midfield apart from Lampard. At least the back door looks tight now.

typical fickle chelsea fans calling him a flop after only 2 games.

Mind you hes only ever had 1 good season in England and that was about 3 years ago. Maybe its karma for showing a complete lack of loyalty and respect to the people who, up until January, paid his exorbitant wages…

There is nothing I would love more than seeing chelsea, and especially torres, miss out on champions league football!

With the football we have been playing we don’t deserve to play champions league football next season. We need to earn that spot because they are saved for the best teams in England and were not playing like one of the better teams. Guess i’ll have to join you Liverpool fans watching the europa league if it comes to that!

      Come on Torres!

I agree, some misguided Liverpool fansd burned red shirts as a sign of disgust at what Torres did, but that is because teh fans are passionate. No free plastic flags handed out at Anfield. We don’t need freebies to try to create an atmosphere, because Liverpool fans are dedicated. Most Chavski fans used to support Arse-nul, or some other cockernee sparrah team until the money came along and bought you a little taste of success. The Liverpool fans were the only voice heard at “the bridge”, coz you lot aren’t proper fans – fair-weather supporters only. If it wasn’t for Abramovich’s money vandalising the premiership your team would be also-rans like they have been for most of their history.

i as you can see am a liverpool fan andwas deeply hurt by nandos departure. But whats with the hes been a flop for the last 2 years? last season he scored 22 goals and spent most of it injured, last season he was the torres we all know. so its the world cup that has knocked his confidence. I wish him all the best, but in three years when the only chelsea players left are cech, ivanovic, boswinga, luiz, ramire, kalou and torres, i dont think he’ll b at the best club in the world.

What Chavski fans forget is that Liverpool were one of the founders of the Champions League, when nobody outside the UK even knew who Chavski were. How many Chavski players and managers have gone down in history?? (durrr, Chav fan, the answer is one: Osgood, who was an international flop anyway). How many Chavski managers are world famous names, (A: none) – (Shankley, Paisley, Dlaglish). How many Liverpool players have captained England – loads. How many Chavski players lead their country: one – Shagger Terry, who was a moral disgrace. How many Liverpool players played in Englands greatest ever victory? (A: five). How many Chav players have made international football history???? (Anyone, please?? I can’t think of one!). If my team was owned by a murdering Russian gangster I would hide for shame – you guys are proud of it!!!
