Christiano Ronaldo says he ‘misses’ Manchester United and has not ruled out the possibility of returning to the Premier League holders at some point in the future.

Ronaldo left United in the summer in a world record £80 million deal and has settled into life in Spain well. But has admitted he misses life at Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and even said he could return their one day.

“Of course I miss playing for Manchester United.

Not just the club but my friends are still there, too. I played there for six years and that’s a long time. Whenever I have the opportunity, I watch them play.

I am still interested in watching Manchester United and, you never know, maybe in the future I could return to play there. It’s always possible.

I will not say I am not happy here at Real Madrid. I am really happy and everyone knows this is my club but, of course, I miss Manchester United, the boss, the players, because I left family there.

I want to fulfil my contract here but, in the future, only God knows.”

It would be a sensational return for the Portuguese forward and this kind of ‘in the future who knows’ statement in reminiscent of the kind we heard when Ronaldo flirted his way to a move from United to Real.

Despite Ronaldo’s statements, it’s highly unlikey any move will happen given the transfer fee United would need to pay and the fact that they are in mountains of debt and wouldn’t be able to afford it. But United fans will be pleased that the club is still close to his heart.

Ronaldo also praised the contribution of Wayne Rooney saying the Manchester United striker deserves all the credit he is currently getting and his his improved performances have nothing to do with his own departure.

“No. Maybe he has scored more goals than last season but I think Rooney is one of the most important players for United and in the Premier League.

“He is a fantastic player but it’s not because I left the club that he is doing well. He has always done well.

“I think it’s possible. He has scored a lot of goals and he is the man at Manchester United at the moment and I am really, really happy for him because he has deserved it because he has worked for it.”
