Rooney Slams FA Ban Decision

Wayne Rooney’s two match ban has been upheld the Football Association has confirmed this morning. As a result Rooney will be missing for the visit of Fulham this weekend and for the FA Cup Semi-Final against Manchester City. Rooney is going to be a massive loss for the next two domestic games but thankfully he will have the opportunity to keep him momentum going next Tuesday in the return leg against Chelsea next Tuesday.

Wayne was understandably disappointed with the outcome of his appeal as he said, “I am gutted to miss two matches, one of which is an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. I am not the first player to have sworn on TV and I won’t be the last.

“Unlike others who have been caught swearing on camera, I apologised immediately. And yet I am the only person banned for swearing. That doesn’t seem right.

“Whatever, I have to accept that what’s happened has happened and move on from here. That is what I intend to do.”

In my opinion this ban is a complete joke. As I have said before, while I don’t condone Rooney’s behaviour, if the FA consider this worthy of a ban then surely they have to ban every player who can be seen clearly swearing at match officials etc. Further to this, when banning Sir Alex from the touchline one of the things that the FA stressed the most was the lack of a guilty plea and apology from Sir Alex. Wayne Rooney apologised 2 hours after the game and accepted the charge. How the FA cannot take that into consideration and reduce the ban as a result is beyond belief. There is no doubt in my mind that the FA are taking this as an opportunity to ban Rooney having had to let him off scot-free after his elbow at Wigan.

Thankfully with Nani, Valencia, Hernandez and Berba on board we should have enough power up front to see off Fulham at Old Trafford this weekend. We’ll miss Rooney against City at Wembley but with a bit of luck this decision will galvanise the squad and will see us through to the showpiece in May.

What do you think? Is Rooney’s ban harsh? Is he being punished because of who he is?
