Fernando Torres: Simply The Wrong Place At The Wrong Time?

By on May 12, 2011

liverpool news

Fernando Torres’ career has been full of ups and downs, but this will certainly astound you, because of his lack of silverware at these clubs.

Honours with Atletico Madrid

Segunda División (Spanish Second Division): 2001–02

Assessment

Having one trophy with Atletico Madrid pretty much says it all, and in all due respect I do indeed respect his move to Liverpool, as I’m pretty sure that he wasn’t satisfied with winning the Segunda Division of all trophies. I guess there’s nothing much to look at here, so let’s get straight to the trophies that Atletico have won since ‘El Nino’ left.

The Atletico Madrid after Fernando Torres

UEFA Cup Champions, 2007-08

Probably a trophy that Fernando Torres wanted to win, but well, I guess that’s what he got for his impatience with the lack of silverware that could be found in Spain. So let’s move on to Liverpool.

Pre-Fernando Torres Liverpool

FA Cup Champions, 2006
Champions League Champions 2005

Fernando Torres at Liverpool

In the summer of 2007, many of Liverpool fans were optimistic about their chances, with the reason being that they had a strong forward amongst their ranks now. Fernando Torres indeed helped Liverpool get their highest Premier League placing, but he didn’t manage to win ANYTHING at Liverpool.

Post-Fernando Torres Liverpool

Since Liverpool got kicked out of literally every cup before Fernando Torres’ departure I guess it would be unfair to measure in terms of silverware. But Luis Suarez has done well to more than fill the boots of the Spaniard and Liverpool seem challengers for the title next season. Time for Chelsea!

Pre-Fernando Torres Chelsea

Premier League Champions 2009-10
Champions League Runners Up 2007-08

And not to mention, Chelsea were indeed 50 million pounds richer before they signed Fernando Torres.

Fernando Torres at Chelsea

The word ‘flop’ probably sums up his time at Chelsea, with him failing to produce convincing performances. Chelsea are set to win nothing this season and I guess that’s the curse continued for Fernando Torres.

Overall

If not for his blood being Spanish (especially since he did nothing to help Spain’s cause), he would pretty much have no major trophies to show for his long career so far. I mean it would seem pretty sad if you only had a ‘Segunda Division Champions’ on your Domestic Titles page for your Wikipedia page wouldn’t it?

Build a bridge and get over it lads. It’s the best bit of business LFC have done in years. Suarez and Carroll are looking good for next season while Tories needs to have a serious look at himself over the summer.

Isn’t it weird that Torres’ replacement at Atletico was Uruguayan star Diego Forlan, who led the team to Champions League, got Golden Boot and Pichichi Trophy and won Europa League and UEFA Super Cup, and now El Nino’s replacement at Liverpool is Uruguayan star Luis Suarez? It looks like an Omen… hahaha

It is pathetic to find an author/writer who has a chickhen memory to forget that Torres scored a winner against Germany in EURO 2008 final. It shows that you hate Chelsea and not Torres and this is foolishness. Leave chelsea for its supporters nobody cares about liverpool. Suarez is not everything. He is just but a controversial player.

“He is just but a controversial player” true dat. controversial in the sense he rips defenses apart. Manure, Shitty, Birmingham, Fullham, can not stop the “controversial” Suarez, while Chelsea are left with a petulant 50m crock….. Sorry mate, but Suarez is by far a more important player than Torres could ever be. He has heart, spirit, and never stops. Hahahah. Torres will be sold next season for a third of what you paid for him. His best is behind him….

you’re delusional if you think suarez is half as good as torres is when torres is at his worst.
i’m a lfc fan and i think cleaning up the team and giving kenny an extension was brilliant but you will have trouble finding a foreign player who had such an impact on a club in such a short term. grow up lad and get rid of the bias. he left so what, the club’s bigger than the player.

We love him, we love Drogba and the rest. We also accept that this title isn’t ours. But every footballer has a bad season, a few of ours just had theirs at the same time. And unless you support Cfc, this is none of your problem. you sort out your club, we’ll sort out ours. btw, this article is stupid as a lot of things can be proved for and against torres. dosn’t say anything about his football, we all know he’s capable of amazing things.

I think its more light hearted banter, putting the euro final to one side its pretty accurate. Call it what you will. I think he will score for chelsea. But not till they build a team round him. If his head is right he is unstoppable. Surrez looks like he improves the other players on the team. Look at maxi and kuyt! Both teams think that they have done the best out of the torres deal. We’ll see next season. Should be a cracker 😉

Well said buddy, without having a biased view. The Euro stat is key, and that was forgotten but apart from that its pretty spot on.
I personally think we have got the best out of the deal as our whole team is performing a lot better without him. The guy is still a top player but just cant see him performing like he did for us in his first season.
I do wish him well tho, and like you said, bring on next season, its gonna be INSANE!!!

Hahaha thats your fault, torres! if u atleast stayed at Livpool until the summer you could have been scoring goals…..By the way go blame yourself EL NINO (DROUGHT) for goals.

Bizarre, isn’t it, that though he scored just the one goal, Chelsea’s best run of the season in the league came after Torres arrived. It’s also hardly fair to say yet that he’s had a trophy drought at Chelsea when he’s been there for just over three months.

Torres was a Euro 2008 Champion scoring the winner, and a World Cup Champion.

Not a bad haul by the age of 26.

Why are so many mickey mousers so bitter, how about the dumb scouse git who changed his name to Fernando Torres ??? ROFLMAO!!!!

Atletico won the Europa league, in 2009/2010 fool -.- that was only because Forlan had the time of his life. Now At Chelsea Torres Gave more assists than he scored, okay? new season new chances? You don’t even know, why they/we call him el nino, Why liverpool paid 40 million for him. Go cry because he left LFC. It hurts me too bro that i cant see him play in Red, but deal with it. Torres scored his goals for, Liverpool, he did his job great. He was there when LFC need him. Remember CL group in 2007/2008, liverpool needs him, torres was there.
Just give him the credits he deserve.
And I don’t think that Carroll, will be the new Number 9.
