Man Utd Beat Arsenal To Promising Defender

By on May 20, 2011

Manchester United look set to kick off their summer transfer spree with unknown Lens defender Raphaël Varane. Arsenal had also been linked with the 18-year old, but it appears Fergie has won the race to sign the teen starlet.

The Guardian reports that Lens wanted up to £10million for Varane, but United are set to offer a payment of instalments with an appearance fee bonus attached. Fergie will want to act quickly, as clubs in Spain and Italy and circling the French U21 star.

Varane’s advisors originally wanted the youngster to go back to France on loan, but United are keen for Varane to get used to the English game and is set to challenge for a centre half position next season.

So Man U haven’t beaten Arsenal to this player as he hasn’t signed or even agreed in principle to the move. As an Arsenal fan I follow the transfer storks through Goonernews and have to say I’ve never heard of this guy before. You really need to brush up on your Journo skills or at least pretend we’ve been beaten to a player we’ve actually heard of. Muppet
