REPORTS: Arsenal’s First Summer Signing Announced Soon…

By on May 22, 2011

According to reports, Wenger has made his first signing of the summer transfer window, he’s a player playing with Argentinian side Velez Sarsfield….. the player that it’s being touted to move to the Gunners is 23 year old midfielder, Ricky Alvarez.

The report states that he’s a versatile midfielder, who can also play in the hole, behind the striker. He is blessed with great pace and a powerful shot, and has been excellent this season with the club. He’s 6’2” which shows that he’s physically well-built, from clips I’ve seen from him on Youtube and other sites…. Ricky Alvarez is a talented player.

Ricky Alvarez will come on a free transfer and it will be made official at the end of the Argentine Clausura campaign…. supposedly, nothing is official yet. Below are some clips displaying his talent and you can click here to view the original article by Goal.com.

What do you think? Is Ricardo Alvarez a suitable signing for the Gunners? Does it show Wenger’s intent on ending Arsenal’s trophyless reign? Please share your thoughts and opinions.

Cheers and take care,

i think he will be an okay signing in my eyes , although wenger said that there will be no additions on flanks …

He looks an absolute gem of a player, kind of an improved breed of Reyes with more commitment and will to enjoy football

Am really hoping this is real, I love Argentine players because the have a passion to win and are strong players. He looks like a Kaka to me and he wont be playing on the wings but right behind RVP, with Rosicky going I say bring him on.

i agree 100%, from just looking at these videos he looks like he would add much more than Rosicky or even Bendtner (when he is played on the wing).

      He’s absolute 2nd kaka. speed, pass,skill
i think he’s better maiayichi who just have only one trick, alverez can play anywhere and make his opponents miserable. His pass and operation with teammates make i most beleive he will fit perfectly in our team.

oh great more obscure players, to go with the likes of eboue, denilson, diaby etc etc. Wengers lost his marbles.

      May 22, 2011 at 10:58 am

Obscure players like van persie, kolo toure, petit, edu, ljungberg, adebayor, eduardo, hleb, sagna, vieira & henry?
I’m sure you knew about all these players before they joined arsenal.

    • Bergkamp10

      May 22, 2011 at 11:12 am

Wenger hasnt, but clearly you have. The likes of Viera, Fabregas, Pires, Ljunberg, Overmars, Petit, Van Bronckhorst, Nasri, and even Henry or Bergkamp were relatively unknown signings, and all of them were very successful at Arsenal. Also look at current players like Walcott, Wilshere, Ramsey, Song, Sagna, Vermaelen, Djorou, Koscielny, RvP, about 90% of Arsenal’s players were unknown but have grown into very talented and useful players. Big Money on established talent doesnt necessarily bring success, look at Aquillani for Liverpool, Forlan or Tevez for United, Torres for Chelsea, Bent or Bentley for Spurs, Adebayor Santa Cruz Bellamy and countless others for Man City, and even for a club like Barcelona players such as Ibrahimovic, Hleb, Gudjonssen.

bergkamp relatively unkwown are u having a laugh, he was one of teh best players n teh woorld at time and was playing for inter milan and it was bruce reoch who signed him not wenger, and overmars was defientaelt not unknwon he had already won a champions league with ajax and one the best wingers in teh world and the same with pires. this is a stupid post ,tevez did very well for united andu have yet to see torres full potential at chelsea. what about teh other which wenger bought which were hopeless crap liek eboue, almnia, squillaci and silvestre and grimandi and senderos and djorou and koscienly and bendtner and wiltord

        • Davi

          May 22, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Yeh, I was careful not to mention overmars for that reason

        • Bergkamp10

          May 22, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Djorou and Koscielny have been pretty decent, they will only get better and i think will be among the EPL’s best defenders in a couple of seasons.

        • Davi

          May 22, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Btw. senderos was really good for the most part, if he’d stuck at it, Imo he would be a top defender by now, kos has been really good this year – after a shakey start he’s got better and better, Djourou was great until his injury and wiltord is a legend! Don’t know why you’d mention him as being crap at all. He scored a lot of vital goals in one season in particular which helped win us the title.

What i heard at the time(From someone within AFC),It wasn’t Rioch that signed Bergkamp,It was David Dein!!

        May 22, 2011 at 1:38 pm

And that’s ok then is it? The highest ticket prices in Europe and we still bargain basement shop for unknowns. Once in a while it would be nice to sign an already quality player

      • Arsenal1Again

        May 22, 2011 at 11:29 pm

Bergkamp and Henry were very well known. Ummmm, did you see France ’98 where France won the world cup? Did you see them also win Euro2000? Henry was the star forward, lol. As for Bergkamp, we all had a heart attack when Bergkamp signed. We couldn’t believe we had signed one of the top ten best ever footballers. I remember that day so well. I remember his testimony being the first game at the Emirates too … this is extra funny because of your user name.

To ask Wenger to make the changes necessary to win something involves a fundamental change in his thinking about the game. This wont happen

This was a reporting error. He is actually signing for Arsenal de Sarandi in Argentina.

      May 22, 2011 at 11:25 am

Looking at the league table over there, with Velez Sarsfield at the top and Arsenal in 17th place, it would seem even less likely for the story to be between the two South American sides. After all, it’s similar to Nani leaving United to go and play for Wigan.

      May 22, 2011 at 6:56 pm

Thanks for commenting, are you serious? I honestly don’t he would sign for a club in a lower place in the standings…. his reported move to the Gunners has more credibility in my opinion.

If this shit’s real…..then I think it could be a peach of a fucking signing. But truth be told….I doubt this ‘article’ holds much truth. No disrespect to the writer intended. I hope it’s real.

totally agree with jonas, im proper excited about this, he has everything kaka had at this age, class skills, dribbling, awareness, and end product, plus hes axtuyally good at fucking crossing, which is about time we had someone who can do that.
plus, he looks fucking hard, he always tracks back and slides in for the crunch and that. if this is tre, which it seems ever increasingly likely to be, then im excited. could be a great signing

he looks like a sick player, out with teh dross liek rosicky and diaby and the hearted players liek bendtner and arshavin, i have seen him play and he plays with real passion and could be a new kaka, plus he 6ft 3 which is welcome on our team which is a bunch of dwarfs

i get sick of people slagging of eboue. He was voted the best right back before sagna joined arsenal. he makes one error then he’d been slagged off.Admitedly a very costly mistake. sick of all you arsenal knockers. The team has go problems but slagging off players is not the way.

Wenger has lost focus n vision! When other epl teams are looking 4 players like neuer, kaka, tevez, ronaldo etc to strengthen their teams look @ dat funny untrue article. I will never support ars if we fail to sign atleast 4 key players to replace denilson, eboue, squil, almunia n co

Very heavy rumours at the time were that Bergkamp was bought on Wengers instructions. Contary to the rubbish spouted above, Bergkamp was not regarded as one of the best players in the world and infact in many people’s eyes had come to english football looking for a final payoff in what was considered then an easy league. At the time it was generally considered that only unknown / failed overseas players were looking to come to english football.

Look guys i am an Arsenal fan and when i watch Arsenal lose and play like fools it hurts i mean look at Arsenal the players they have are not strong not built u look at teams like chelsea, man city, Man Utd, Even spurs they have big strong players that cant be easily be pushed over i also think its time for us all Arsenal fans look into the club look guys football is about money money is everything look at Chelsea at least they still going Strong Man utd still spent money 30mill on Rooney nd berba i don’t kno wats going on in Arsenal wenger cant look at the English Market only the french market or a player that has french language within them and also i think its about time the stupid chairman should leave bring david dean back to Arsenal the foolish chairman just wants money for himself not anybody else and also guys look at Alisher Usmanov he is worth more than stan kroenke check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_football_club_owners#Premier_Leagueit tells u there usmanov is richer than roman and i think peter hill wood wants to disgrace Arsenal since david dein left he knew what he was doing i bet u any money usmanov never knew about how danny fizman sold his share to stan kronke it makes me sick to death of who makes the decisions in the club stan just wants to make money not give and wat if you guys think 35mill is enough for wenger think again we need a player like eto to bang in goals for us wenger signed ricky which should b coming soon he wants to be like fergie and sign a player like henandez the player he signed his a free player MR WENGER use ur brains wherez the money u have got from transfers of adebayor, Henry, Veria and all the other players it dont make sense every year d club say they made profit but do the use it to buy players no MAN CITY are going to be the team now wenger needs to sign Gary cahill, Phil Jagielka, these two would be very good for Arsenal please wenger get rid of Djourou, Sebastien Squillaci, or even Laurent Koscielny, that would be good bring the English talent and i promise Arsenal will win the leauge next season wenger i think its even time he goes or use his brain start using 4-4-2 dont leave a striker up front dont u think he will get tired early wenger should let go of diaby, eboue, denilson, arshavin, clichy, and he should bring in hazad, even how about Zeletan Ibbrahimovic that would be so good a powerhouse get rid of Nicklas Bendtner,Marouane Chamakh, that would be enough to bring Ibbrahimovic, wenger should try and even go for lennon that play for spurs and please try van der vart guys imagine if Cesc dont go van der vart and Cesc in the middle wow and wilshare and Theo Theo Theo or hazard wat a team chamakh i dont think he cant take the English football he looks weak wenger should also go for scoot parker i promise u will all these players at Arsenal they would be a force, thats why i was thinking Arsenal should have sold to usmanov he will give at least 100mill plus for wenger to buy players or he will get rid of him and get frank Rijkkard guys i cant see Arsenal coming to a brakE point if at least 100mill is not given to us to spend we might not even be in the Champions league next near guys. MR WENGER MR PAT RICE AND MR PETER HILL WOOD THINK ABOUT US SUPPORTERS NOT YOURSELVES.

Thanks everyone for commenting, this has been the Gunner story of the week so far.

Here’s a bit of an update: an Argentine journalist via Twitter reported that the news was false, but most sites and news sources have confirmed the deal, we still haven’t had an official response from either Wenger or from Velez Sarsfield, when we get it then it will be more clear.

Nothing is yet confirmed, but if he does sign, I believe he’ll be a quality signing.

Thanks, take care everyone, and I’ll keep you all updated,

comon the guys on a free transfer! surely if he was that good he wouldnt be on a free! well thats my view. in my eyes i would prefer to keep fabregas and nasri and get scott parker in, aswell as a 20+ goal scorer with cahill and phil jones as cb’s

      May 22, 2011 at 11:20 pm

Thanks for commenting…. did a thought ever occur to you, that he may have rejected an offer for a new contract? Alot of people who watch this player, have stated that if indeed, the rumor’s true, then Arsenal have made a coup!

      Something to think about, right?

        May 23, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Yes, I do agree defence should be a main priority, but from what I’ve heard about this player…. he looks like a quality player.

My dream signing for a forward would be either Hulk or Falcao, but I doubt one of them will arrive.

        Cheers,

Was he signed because he is good or free ? Personally could not care less – just another stinking foreigner

    • Omar Almasri

      May 23, 2011 at 10:36 pm

“Just another stinking foreigner”, I’m sorry, but some of Arsenal’s greatest players were foreigners from Vieira to Bergkamp to Henry (who’s the greatest Gunner of all time) so don’t start discriminating against foreigners, if it weren’t for them then the Premier League wouldn’t have been the success it is today.

P.S. If England’s are the best, how come the England national team hasn’t won a major championship in 40 years?

This is for dan. You spent the time to write your thoughts fair enough your entitled to your opinion but its not very good. all i can say is glad your not managing your team, and you do not know much either about players or running a club. Wrenger is pound for pound the best manger going. I am not an arsenal fan but you guys crack me up. The guy has made you into a european power house. 15 years on the trott in the champs leauge. built you the best stadium in england. he even told you you would not be able to compete finansially for 6 years due to the stadium. and that was before the recession which has hit you lot hard. just cause you have a certain owner does not mean they will spend money, like abramovich. the stadium has surcured your future for the next 70 years. if you did not have him you would be in the same boat as spurs, villa and my beloved everton. he has tried to buy centre halfs which you are all crying out for, he tried to sign jags from us, but we wanted 25m the same as lescott. which is over priced. its not his fault man city and chelsea play by different rules. your team can not compete yet he keeps you up there. you do not have a right to win things, and i love moyes but i would swap him in a eye blink for wrenger. none of you know what you have.
you are crazy to want van der vart even rednapp is thinking of getting rid cause he is bone idle, does not run at all. try actually watching football not just lisening to the fools on tv. they are not the sharpest bunch of people ex pro. just lisen to stan collymore on talk sport.

Im from Argentina, Velez is my team, where he plays, i haven’t seen any player like him for a long long time, he is just brillant. By far the best player of the moment in Argentina. Very similar to Kaka but with a much better technique. He will be very big soon.
