Fergie – De Gea The Man To Replace VDS

Manchester United chief Sir Alex Ferguson believes David de Gea is the right man to replace retired Dutch legend Edwin van der Sar.

Manchester United chief Sir Alex Ferguson believes David de Gea is the right man to replace retired Dutch legend Edwin van der Sar.

The Spaniard arrived at Old Trafford for a cool £18million last month with some questioning the age and experience of the goalkeeper, but Fergie was quick to draw comparisons to Chelsea’s Petr Cech.

United had been linked with the Chelsea No1 before the Czech international made his name at Stamford Bridge with Fergie unconvinced with Cech’s experience. However, Fergie believes De Gea has all the qualities to succeed Van der Sar.

“Replacing Edwin van der Sar is very difficult,” said Ferguson. “He was a great goalkeeper.

“But the benefit we have with De Gea is that he is only 20.

“The qualities that stood out for us are his great composure and use of the ball.

“He is quick and agile, which is something we banked on.

“When we assessed him I thought he was the right goalkeeper to take.”
