Van Persie Rocks Arsenal By Refusing To Discuss New Deal

Arsenal have been served an early blow in their attempts to tie Robin Van Persie down to a new deal, after the Dutchman confirmed he won’t be discussing a new contract this season.

Several reports over the weekend claimed that Van Persie is becoming frustrated at the direction the club is taking after the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri this summer followed by the clubs worst start to a season in 58 years. The Dutchman is also entering the last 2 years of his contract and there are fears he will be reluctant to sign an extension.

Arsene Wenger is keen to avoid the contract drama he encountered with Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri this past summer, after he was forced to sell the pair to City when they refused to sign new deals, and the French tacticial has promised to do all he can to persuade his stars to commit to Arsenal before next summer.

However, Van Persie has said he is happy with his contract and feels he is too busy to open discussions during the current season, amid mounting rumours Man City are set to test Arsenal’s resolve with a £30m January move for the Dutchman:

‘I still have almost two years, so for the moment that’s fine. I’m happy with my contract. I can’t look into the future. I can’t see us talking now because we are so busy – we have games every three or four days.’

‘Maybe we will leave it until the end of the season,’ Van Persie added. ‘The main thing for me is the team and that we play well.’
