Joe Cole has NOT signed for Arsenal….YET

Joe Cole

Yesterday it was widely reported that Joe Cole had agreed a 3-year-contract with Arsenal and some even suggesting he had signed on the dotted line and was officially a Gooner. However, these reports are somewhat premature as it’s now believed that Cole has delayed any transfer or contract negotiations until after the World Cup.

Several sources have claimed that Cole’s representatives had agreed a lucrative 3-year deal, with Arsenal willing to pay a substantial signing on fee as well as £110,000pw for the 28-year-olds services. Most Arsenal fans immediately dismissed the reports, arguing that this was obviously a load of rubbish due to the strict wage structure in place at the Emirates, forgetting that Arsene signed Sol Campbell on a free and broke the wage cap for him, so a similar deal for Cole is possible.

The reports emerged after Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp claimed he thought Cole had already agreed a deal with another club, and the fact that Joe and his wife Carly have just had another child and were reluctant to leave London. So it’s possible the papers have put 2+2 together and equalled Arsenal. Which would be a fair assumption, given the fact it seems likely he will leave Chelsea, Harry says Spurs are out the race, Cole has already rejected West Ham, leaving Arsenal as the only viable London-based option.

But it seems we will now be in for a wait to find out where Cole will be playing his football next season, as the latest news coming from fleet-street is that he will now put all contract talks on hold until after the World Cup. Although the good news is that Arsenal have definitely met with Cole’s people and are keen on a deal.

I am split on this one to be honest. I like Joe Cole as a player, he would fit in perfectly with the Arsenal way of playing football, he can play in a variety of positions, is English which might make the media like us a bit more, and has vast premiership experience. But we are hardly crying out for a short, tricky, technical type player are we? If Arsene does sign Cole, i would expect a departure with Arshavin, Vela, Eboue, Rosicky and Eduardo the possible candidates.

It may be that Wenger is weighing up what (cheap) creative options are available if Fabregas leaves and sees Cole as an able replacement in the centre of midfield, where Joe himself thinks is his best position. We would get a couple of good years out of him until he hits 30 when Wenger will immediately think he has lost all footballing ability and Ramsey would be ready to take over.

There is no doubting signing Joe Cole on free transfer from the premiership champions and London rivals Chelsea would be a coup and would strengthen our squad, so from that point of view it would be a great move. But if it means less money to strengthen the defense and buy a proper goalkeeper, I’d rather we didn’t.

Would you like to see Joe Cole at Arsenal? Where would he play?

I agree. But I am also concerned about his injury record. We don’t want another injury prone player (amongst the many things that Joe Cole seems to have in common with a number of players in our squad).

We have enough cash to sign these other players that you mention, apart from the fact they we will get Joe on a free anyway.

We will/should have enough money to bring in a GK and at least one CB as well as Cole, but A) you have to take in to account the signing-on fee and increased wages Cole’s deal would incur, a ‘free’ transfer is never ‘free’, and B) what Wenger is like spending £££!

I really hope this is true, Joe Cole would be a great coup for the club, and he will want to prove the Chelski what that have lost!

    Let’s hope he does sign.

i can’t understand websites who try to confirm signings before a deal has actually been done. They end up looking like fools time after time but never seem to learn. There have been just as many reports that J Cole is going to Man utd and if these sites were to be believed Cesc Fabregas had signed for Barcelona weeks ago!

It would deffinatly strenghthen our curremt squad but it would mean we need 2 sell rosicky who i personally thin is usless nw n maybe edurado then we hav 3 first choice forwards, even if injuries strike we hav vela jus in cas n i think the reason wenger is tryin 2 keepa big squad is so we dnt hav the same problems as last year we need 1 class defender n 1 keper n wer sorted

There is absolutely no way in this world that Joe will be signing for Arsenal, no way at all. Why would he want to join a team that hasn’t won anything for years, is about to lose their best player and where the first language is french. He’s holding out for deal with Man United and if that doesnt happen he will go to spurs to link up with his england international team mates and former manager.

He MIGHT sign for Arsenal for the reasons stated in the article. He doesnt want to uproot his family including newly born child, so if he stays in london that should rule out Man Utd. Harry has said Spurs are out the race, Chelski wont pay him what he wants, so who does it leave?!

I think they do it because people flock in their thousands to check the news and the advertisers are interested.

Cole would be great, but sadly, i thinkk Cesc will leave before it happens

We need more English players. SEll all these Euros and the Africans too, the latter leave for the ACN for 6 weeks

    arshavin
    bendtner
    chamack
    (fabregas)
    nasri
    van persie
    walcott
    ramsey

“Forgetting that Arsene signed Sol Campbell on a free and broke the wage cap for him” – ………Sol signed on a £20,000 ‘pay as your play’ contract. meaning he only got the money if he played a game.

Did you mean the first time he signed?

Yes, of course i meant the first time we signed him! When we stole the scums captain, great day.
