Former Midfielder – ‘Fernando Torres Not Worth £1m’

Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend has blasted the form of Fernando Torres, claiming the striker looks like he isn’t even worth £1m.

Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend has blasted the form of Fernando Torres, claiming the striker looks like he isn’t even worth £1m.

Townsend made 110 appearances for Chelsea during a 3 year spell in the yearly 90’s but used his column in the Daily Mail to hit out the clubs current No.,9, Torres. The Spaniard’s troubles at Stamford Bridge have been well documented, after struggling to live up to his British transfer record fee of £50m following his move from Liverpool last year.

The 27-year-old has managed only 3 goals so far in 24 appearances for Chelsea and Townsend didn’t hold back with his criticism, labelling his poor form as a “nightmare that doesn’t seem to end” and claiming the striker doesn’t look like he’s worth £1m never mind £50m:

“When I look at him, I see another Roman Pavlyuchenko – a striker who knows he is fourth choice and who looks as if he would rather be anywhere else.

“There is no nuisance value in Torres. He doesn’t rattle the centre half, chase lost causes into the corner, crash into the first row of seats after running down the full back. He’s not scoring, so what does he give the team?

“You feel like watching his matches from behind the sofa; it’s the nightmare that doesn’t seem to end.

“If he was a £1million player going through this ordeal, you might think he’s not worth £1m with the way he is playing. But this is the British record transfer signing, at £50m.”
