Manchester United Preparing €32m Swoop For Liverpool Target

By on December 5, 2011

Manchester United are ready to spend €32m on highly rated Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez, according to reports in Spain.

Martinez has attracted interest from all over Europe after becoming an integral part of the team during his 5 years at Bilbao and his form has lead to 7 international caps with World and European Champions Spain.

Liverpool and Man Utd have both been linked with the 23-year-old but Bilbao have always maintained the player is not for sale. However, it became apparent that Martinez has a buy-out clause of €32m in his contract and reports in Spain suggest United are willing to trigger the clause in order to land their man.

Martinez made his name as a defensive midfielder but has been used as a centre back this season, which is not a surprise given he stands at 6ft 3″, and it’s this versatility that has attracted Sir Alex Ferguson.

If he is that good then buy him. Hope he is not another Antonio Nunez or Bruno Cheroyu. Remember?

I’m a season ticket holder here in Bilbao and Javi Martinez is going to be world-class. He’s already played 5 seasons, broken into the Spain squad and would be playing but Spain have a plethera of talent in that area. Would easily get into the England team. A great attacking midfielder who can defend and runs his socks off. Quiet off the field (he’s at university) and a lion on it. Would be massive in the PL. His price is so high because Athletic only have Basque players and there isn’t any other Basque as good as he is to replace him. (Apart from Alonso that is but he’d never leave Madrid.)

And he’s only been used as a centre-back due to injuries and suspensions. I would argue he’s a box to box midfielder rather than a defensive one.

I don’t think Ferguson will go for Martinez. Phil Jones, although a centre-back, has done a good job in the DM position. Liverpool, on the other hand, have just lost Lucas to injury and – despite the additions of Adam and Henderson – still lack a settled midfield. With Gerrard still absent due to injury, Martinez would be the perfect addition for Liverpool come January.
