Tottenham are set to welcome back Michael Dawson in the New Year which could see an end to their interest in Bolton defender Gary Cahill, according to reports today.

Dawson has missed the majority of the season after picking up an achilles’ tendon injury in late August and it was feared the defender would be out well in to the New Year.

Despite Tottenham performing superbly during Dawson’s absence, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was keen on adding another centre back to his ranks in January with Gary Cahill top of his wish-list.

However, Harry Redknapp has confirmed that Dawson is due back earlier than expected and will resume first team duties in a matter of weeks, and if the England ace doesn’t suffer any set-backs, his return could spell an end to Tottenham’s interest in Cahill with Redknapp having other priority areas of his squad to strengthen.

Redknapp confirmed the news of Dawson’s return:

‘Michael could be back in early January,’

‘He’s getting there, he’s back outside running now and he is coming on well.’ Redknapp confirmed.

Cahill Interest

Cahill is still expected to move on in the January window with Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd all still being credited with interest. Chelsea remain favourites to land the 25-year-old but Man Utd could make a late charge after captain Nemanja Vidic was ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

Arsenal are unlikely to follow up their summer interest after the improved form shown by Laurent Koscielny in recent weeks, and strengthening the full back areas remains Arsene Wenger’s priority, as the Gunners are currently without a fit first team full back.
