Owen Coyle has confirmed that Chelsea are on the verge of completing a cut-price deal for Bolton’s Gary Cahill after the two clubs agreed a transfer fee.

Cahill is out of contract in June and Bolton have been forced to accept a bid of around £5m from the Blues otherwise they would have risked losing the centre back for nothing in the summer.

The 26-year-old was at the centre of a transfer battle between Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham last summer but the trio refused to match Bolton’s £15m asking price and the stopper remained at the Reebok.

Manchester United were the latest club to be linked with a January move but it seems Chelsea have won the race after Owen Coyle confirmed the two clubs had agreed a fee and the Londoners are now due to have discussions with the players representatives. In his weekly press conference, Coyle said:

“The situation is that the clubs, Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea, have at this moment in time agreed a fee for Gary. Now it is up to Gary’s representatives to speak to Chelsea.

“From our part, I’ve said to Gary that this is why he has representatives and that his focus is on football and football only.

“Gary’s mind will be on making sure that he is ready to give a big performance for Bolton Wanderers against Wolves. He has to be ready to give everything, as he always is.”
