Following the sensational return of Arsenal hero Thierry Henry last night, Gunners fans have been jokingly calling for more former players to return to the club.

Names such as Seaman, Dixon, Winterburn, Bergkamp and Wright have been put forward as potential January signings by nostalgic Arsenal fans.

However, another Arsenal legend has set the rumour mill into over-drive after using his personal Twitter account to reveal he was on the way to Arsenal’s London Colney for training. The player in question; Robert Pires. Here’s the Tweet sent earlier this morning:

38-year-old Pires is now without a club after being released by Aston Villa in the summer. Of course it highly likely that he is simply training with the Arsenal squad to maintain fitness levels, or perhaps it’s a joke on the Frenchman’s part following Henry’s return and he’s playing up to the calls for former greats to rejoin the club. But you just never know…..

Ive always been a huge fan of Pires. He’s one of my favourite player’s to play for the club over the last 15 years, but even i think bringing him back would be a bit of a stretch. Henry’s return made sense, but i’d rather Wenger gave a chance to Miyaichi or Chamberlain than bring back Bobby.

***UPDATE*** Jack Wilshere has confirmed that Robert Pires took part in training with the Arsenal squad today, tweeting:

“Super, super Robert Pires is training today……..return of another king?!? How amazing would that be!”

Sorry Arsenal fans, looks like Pires wont be re-joining! He later confirmed he’s just training to retain his fitness:

“And of course i am training just to maintain my fitness level! But thanks I appreciate you all want me back at Arsenal!”
