International forward committed to Liverpool move

June 13, 2010 - Pretoria, South Africa - epa02199743 Serbia

By Peter Jacobs.

Departing Standard Liege forward Milan Jovanovic yesterday confirmed he is set to join Liverpool, despite Rafa Benitez leaving the club. Benitez was the man responsible for bringing the six foot left winger to the Premiership, but speculation has grown since the Spaniards departure from Merseyside.

There were rumours of Benitez trying to ambush the deal and bring him to Italy with Inter Milan, as his contract expires with Standard Leige on 30th June. However, the 29 year-old Serbian was quoted by Belgian newspaper Sporza,

‘I will not break the contract (with Liverpool) because Benitez has left’.

Liverpool have not yet confirmed a deal but it is the strongest indication yet that he will be the first summer signing for the Reds. Jovanovic is a versatile forward who can play on the wing or as a supporting striker. With the reported departure of left wingers of Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun, Jovanovic could have an important role next season as a wide midfielder.

With copious amounts of other reports linking players away from Anfield, the imminent arrival of an experienced international forward is welcome news for the fans. Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby has been reported in saying what an ‘excellent’ signing he could be.

‘He’s got real pace and he’ll be an excellent signing if we get him.

‘There is much more to come from him [in the World Cup]’ He told Liverpool’s official club website.

Jovanovic is currently playing for his native Serbia in the World Cup and has started both of their Group D fixtures. He was also on the score sheet in their second match against group favourites Germany.

What do you think of the Jovanovic signing?
