Update on Arsenal’s goalkeeper search

 FedericoMarchetti

By Fab4.

As Arsenal continue their search for a new goalkeeper they were linked with a few more names over the weekend. Reports in Italy suggested that Arsene Wenger was now interested in Italian No.2 Federico Marchetti after failing to land Mark Schwarzer from Fulham. Apparently we are also monitoring AZ Alkmaar’s Argentina international Sergio Romero and Arsene is checking them both out while in South Africa working for French TV.

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood confirmed recently that they had approached Fulham over the availability of Schwarzer, only to be told he was not available. So a move for Marchetti is now being mooted. The 27-year-old replaced the injured Gigi Buffon at half time during Italy’s 1-1 draw with Paraguay and started the 1-1 draw with New Zealand yesterday.

Juventus are also said to be looking at Marchetti due to their concerns over Buffon’s long-term fitness but Cagliari have tried to put off any potential interest by placing a £12.5m price tag on their stopper. The third name to be linked with Arsenal over the weekend was Dynamo Kiev’s 35-year-old Ukraine goalkeeper Oleksandr Shovkovskyy, although he’s not believed to be high on the list of priorities.

So more names linked with being Arsenal’s new No.1 and none of them particularly inspiring. No i don’t know a lot about any of them, Marchetti, Romero or Shovkovskyy, but their not who i feel we need at the club. Perhaps someone can enlighten me to the qualities of any of them? Romero is the one i have seen the most of out of the three and he looks decent enough, but i would still prefer a household name or someone with premiership experience.
