UEFA ‘Team of the Year’ Revealed: Bale In, Van Persie & Vidic Miss Out

By on January 18, 2012

tottenham news

UEFA have revealed their 2011 ‘Team of the Year’ and Gareth Bale is the Premier Leagues only representative, as Barcelona and Real Madrid dominate.

UEFA.com invited its users to choose their team from a selection of stand out performers in each position, and after over 4.5 million votes the XI has been revealed today.

Unsurprisingly, the side is full of Barca and Real Madrid players but the Premier League will feel disappointed to have only one representative.

Arsenal’s Robin van Persie misses out despite scoring an incredible 35 goals in 2011, but to be fair he was up against arguably the two best players on the planet in Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Man City’s Sergio Aguero and Man Utd Javier Hernandez also missed out.

Namaja Vidic may also feel aggrieved not to be selected after an impressive 2011 at the back for United. While Chelsea’s Ashley Cole and City’s Vincent Kompany were also overlooked. Joe Hart was also on the shortlist of goalkeepers but predictably Iker Casillas won the vote.

Other nominees who missed the cut were Edwin van der Sar, Nani, Jack Wilshere, Y. Toure, Gervinho, Luka Modric, David Silva, Ashley Young and Juan Mata. Liverpool had no players nominated.

But the inclusion of Bale will surprise few after some devastating displays, none more so than when he bagged an incredible hat-trick at the San Siro.

UEFA Team of the Year:

Casillas

(Real Madrid)

Alves               Pique              Silva           Marcelo

(Barcelona)   (Barcelona)   (AC Milan)   (R. Madrid)

Robben             Xavi              Iniesta               Bale

(B. Munich)    (Barcelona)   (Barcelona)   (Tottenham)

Messi            Ronaldo

(Barcelona)     (R. Madrid)

Coach: Guardiola (Barcelona)

I suspect that this poll is Spanish skewed as i would pick Kompany ahead of the leaden Pique and room should be found for Rooney. Casillas is also out gunned by many goalies in England and Germany. It is easy to look a good keeper in a two team league.

Room for Rooney!!! Manchester goggles on, I personally think the correct two are up front but if anyone was going to muscle in there this year how can it be anyone other than Van Persie? Think there is a shout for Kompany though

Despite the fact that Casillas looks less of a player now, than he did years ago when La Liga was far less of a two team league?

You’re an ignoramus, and clueless about football to boot.

What does Van Persie have to do to get in there? I agree the Spanish league is boring and only has two teams fighting for title. Barcelona would not be as dominant or look as good if they were in the premiership. Who cares what our European neighbors think any how. I doubt many British people go on the UEFA website as we all know they are corrupt. Much better websites to go on for football news.

If the Spanish league is so boring how come the best players are in that league and not the EPL. The EPL is entertaining because of foreign players and that is a fact. English players are stars that never shine. England full of bias supporters ,media makes England win every tournament in the silly newspapers. Englamd players at best are average and that is putting it mildly

tethys you’re speaking out of your arse if you think that Kompany is better than Pique. If that was the case, Barca and Real would be after him. As for Rooneys inclusion, please dont make me laugh. He certainly isnt better than Messi or Ronaldo, both of whom would make any team on the planet. The goal keeper is debatable but Casillas is an excellent keeper anyway.

    • Rob B

      January 18, 2012 at 12:41 pm

“speaking out of his arse” More to the fact that you obviously have little football knowledge off hand i can name 4 centre backs that are better than pique – 1.Vidic 2.Kompany 3.Hummels 4.Subotic and to say they would be both after him lol there content with him as hes Spanish! and for casillas i can think of 2 keepers in world who are better than him!
so rather than slate someones opinion do some research yourself or just stick to your armchair and be quiet!

Rob B you contradict yourself, chastising someone for slating then doing exactly the same yourself. If your saying Hummels and Subotic are better than Pique you had better add Vermealen(spell? as well. Although it is debatable Pique is a fine centre half

Team is obviously based on performances in last years Champions League so seems relatively fair. Kompany, Hummels & Subotic better than World Cup & Euro winner as well as multiple Champions League trophies. Stats and facts do not back you up although sure Football Manager does (p.s it’s not real, it’s just a computer game) How did Kompany etc do in this years Chp’s League.. Someone else said what does RVP have to do to get in… Simple stop playing for a gash team !!!

This team is just full of household names that everyone knows it may aswell be called “UEFA’s spanish team of 2011” Real madrid and Barca would definatley struggle in the premier league both teams are just full of diving girls

    • Davi

      January 18, 2012 at 1:59 pm

Real Madrid and Barca would struggle in the PL?!?!?!? Barca made Utd look absolutely ordinary the last couple of times they faced them. They’re the best side I’ve ever seen, and surely one of the best of all time. No one in the PL even come close to them.
I don’t like Madrid, but Ronaldo scored more goals than Henry ever did in a season – and that was a few years ago. Their teamsheet is just a list of proven world class players and renowned young talents. Again, no one in the PL has a squad that comes close to Madrid.

Barca is a great team but as a fan of football (i’m not british)the Champions League Final match, it was an important match which they prepared for, I doubt that Barca would consistently be that impressive if they played back to back games against Premier League top teams such as United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, City, and Spurs!! I dissagree because competition is much tougher in the PL. La Liga is a 2 legged race, there is no competition with the exception of Valencia being an average team!!

I watch every match in La liga and EPL. Lets put Barca through a series of matches with Everton , Bolton and the likes in the crazy relegation time to see if barca can truly match the breakneck counterattack speed of English football

  6. brad

    January 18, 2012 at 1:10 pm

Barca and Madrid would not struggle in the premier league, everytime Barca play an english team they win and Madrid havent played an english team with there current squad and manager but the fact that there ahead of Barca in there league speaks for itself.

There is no way rooney should be anywhere near that uefa team of the year, van persie is ahead of him but apart from that and the gk I think they got it pretty much right

Have to agree Barca would beat our best teams hands down as they do try to play an element of football, even City and Chelsea now. However, it would be interesting to see how they would do at the likes of Stoke on a wet, cold Wednesday night, I reckon there may be a few surprises?

ER last time Arsenal played Barca 11 v 11 we won the home leg and were leading the away leg until Van Perise got sent off for………….kicking the ball away………..I still find that hard to believe. So just because Barca always crucify Man U, they DON’T alawys beat English teams.

On a different point it’s nice to see Bale (a very good player who had a few good games last year) get in ahead of Van Persie (the second most effective striker in the world). Lest we forget, Ronaldo is a left sided midfielder so either Bale kept him out or Bale kept Van Persie out. Another perfect example of the anti-Arsenal bias that permeates the footballing authorities.

As for suggestions about Rooney, I have to go to hospital and get my sides stiched up from laughing too much.

“ER last time Arsenal played Barca 11 v 11 we won the home leg and were leading the away leg until Van Perise got sent off”
I’m an Arsenal fan, but have to be honest, they probably should have had another 3 penalties over the tie, and were clearly the better side. Any side can be beaten in a single game, especially when things go against them (as they did in the 1st leg, but agree they were lucky in the 2nd leg that RVP got sent off).

It is true that every time Barca play an English they have won, except for when Arsenal beat them.

I think the point was more about the premier league in whole, and the demands of playing in it for the entire season.

I don’t doubt Barca would beat most English teams, but I don’t think they’d be able to go the distance, and dominate how they do in the Spanish league.

Barcelona would walk the Premiership, seriously teams wouldn’t even get a touch. As for Barcelona “Dominating” the Spanish league aren’t Real Madrid 5 points clear at the top of La Liga?
As for “the demands” of the Premiership well David Silva, Torres (pre huge dip in form) and Alonso didn’t do too badly in the Prem and none of these are good enough for the Barca team!!

      • Mike

        January 18, 2012 at 1:55 pm

And Fabregas who played for the fourth best team in England is setting Barca alight!! And Barca are habitual poachers of players who come to England. Why’s that if their league is so good.

It would be intersting to see how many players went to play in Barca if it was located 1,000 miles further north and England was on the Med.

        • jonny

          January 18, 2012 at 2:31 pm

“Barca are habitual poachers of players who come to England”
What?? Most of Barca’s players are home grown and the only players there that played in England played for Barca first (Pique and Fabregas). Oh and Fabregas may have played for the fourth best team in England but he was comfortably one of the best players in the league.
Most of the Players who play for Barcelona came from Barcelona so I don’t get your point about where they are geographically!

I’m sorry mate, Barca are too good. No one’s saying they would go unbeaten, but their side is full of players who will be remembered as legends. They are not just incredibly skillful, but their players are exceptional athletes as well. They would dance around solid sides like Stoke as though they are nothing.

No Kompany, Silva or Yaya, this is about as biased as it can get.

Pathetic especially extremely pathetic coming from a governing body.

Gareth Bale, don’t make me laugh!

    • Davi

      January 18, 2012 at 2:08 pm

Silva has only started looking Really exceptional since the start of this season, and Yaya is great but not on the level of Xavi and Iniesta. Kompany is the best CB in England by far but didn’t get a chance to show it in Europe last season, and City were poor in the CL this.

    • jonny

      January 18, 2012 at 2:53 pm

Listen CiTyBlUe this may be beyond your comprehension but this team is the UEFA team of the year meaning its based on players performances in the Champions League and City weren’t in the Champions League last Season and they were brutal in it this season, falling at the first hurdle.
Barca won the Competition so thay are well represented, Gareth Bale stood out with his outstanding hat trick against Inter and 2 other goals plus 5 assists in a Spurs team that went to the quarter finals.
So shut up about the City players this isn’t about them this is about the most outstanding players in the Champions league last year and none of City’s players deserve to be on this team.
So stop insulting people who are more knowledgeable and intelligent than you an think about reading something and maybe engage your brain before posting to a site again.

U guys shud stop talkin nonsense. The only questionable player there is pique nd iniesta was kinda inconsistence. And as for english-spanish league debate, barca beat any team at epl easily nd real showed the difference in class btw the 2 leagues wit how they easily disposed spurs last season. Chelsea playd like a small team against valencia, they sat back nd counter attack.. If u want a competitive league, go to france or germany where dfrent teams r winnin the league evry season nt epl where it is either manutd or chelsea.

Jonny is a muppet, Silva would walk straight into the Barca team as would Yaya, only reason Yaya didnt get a look in was because others got preferential treatment, No doubt about it Barca have regreted letting Yaya leave.

He can’t displace any of them from the Spanish team so how would he displace them from the Barca team.
It is you who is the muppet.
The only way Toure could get in the Uefa team was at the expense of Xavi as that was how the voting worked. Now do you think Toure is better than Xavi??

I for one will choose ashily cole ahead of macelo kompany n vanmelin ahead of piquea,as for baca n mardrid dominating d uefa time i tink is faul cos if both d team is playing in premiership dey will not be dominate d league every yr.in cl man u as beat dem n dey as beat man u d same apply to arsenal, cheasle n liverpool so i don’t see d way dey ar superior to d team in premiarship

RobB I’d love to discuss football with you face to face but I guess it wont happen. As for Kompany, Silva and Toure not making the chosen eleven, tough shit. Toure was at Barca for a while but was surplus to requirements. Neither Barca or Real thought that Silva was good enough to make their squad and Kompany has only come good this season. RVP is a tremendous player but is he better than Messi or Ranaldo, I dont think so. I remember a lot of people making stupid comments last year prior to the Champions league final between Barca and Manure that Manure is the best of British and they will wipe the floor with Barca particularly as it was being held at Wembley. The outcome couldnt have been more different as they absolutely made Manure look like amateurs. As for Barca and Real coming unstuck against teams like Stoke City, thats hysterical as they would wipe the floor with them. No wonder when England play any significant country football wise, they come horribly unstuck. We get carried away with the players in the EPL at times.

There is no point in arguing about who should be in it.

It is fair point that the likes of Kompany and Van Persie should maybe have got in, but as someone said its been done in a biased fashion slightly.

Saying that there isn’t a player in that team that would not be wanted by any fan at their club, the team is made up of the best in the world.

Just look at past teams gone by, Shaun Goater never got a look in and we all can admit that he was the best striker in the World at one point.

Based on last years champions league, not a chance it is. Why on earth would Silva and Robben(Both out in the last 16) be in it

My team based on all round performances

Manuel Neuer (Schalke/Bayern) Had a terrific champions league campaign with Schalke and has continued that form with Bayern

Dani Alves(Barcelona)- Hard not to contain him in the team as the guy is the reason Messi has so much roaming room

Vincent Kompany(Man City)- Thiago Silva may be quality but he hasnt been as effective as Kompany who marshalled an impressive end to last season and a terrific start league wise to this one and despite the CL exit(albeit in a very tough group) has been solid

Gerard Pique(Barcelona) – integral to Barcas backline

Phillipe Lahm(Bayern) – Consistency personified, the guy never lets down attacking or defending

Iniesta, Xavi and Bale would all make my midfield as they have had phenomenal 2011s but I would replace Robben with Ronaldo and push the freescoring Robin Van Persie into the lone striker role

    My Team

    GK Manuel Neuer
    RB Dani Alves
    CB Gerard Pique
    CB Vincent Kompany
    LB Philip Lahm
    CM Xavi Hernandez
    CM Andres Iniesta
    CAM Lionel Messi
    RW Cristiano Ronaldo
    LW Gareth Bale
    ST Robin Van Persie

    Subs:
    GK Joe Hart
    FB Marcelo
    CB Thiago Silva
    CM David Silva
    RW Mario Goetze
    LW Eden Hazard
    ST Wayne Rooney

Team is obviously based on performances in Champions League during last year. City players hardly showered themselves with glory by not making out of the group stages. Van Persie got needlessly sent off when his team had a excellent chance of knocking out Barcelona. Bale destroyed Maicon up until then world best rb in both games and looked outstanding as Spurs made QF. 4 million voters in this pole not just a few xenophobic people moaning their players are best..
