Joe Cole agreed Arsenal deal? Doesn’t sound like it!

One positive from England’s exit from the World Cup is that after weeks of speculation, we will soon know where Joe Cole will be playing football next season. Several ‘sources’ have claimed that Cole has already agreed a deal to join Arsenal after being released by Chelsea, and as long as he passes a medical he will be playing at the Emirates next year. But after reading Cole’s post match comments yesterday on Fifa.com, he doesn’t sound like bloke who has already sorted out his future.

Cole said: “I want to get my future sorted as quickly as possible. My season for Chelsea wasn’t great for what I believe were political reasons rather than footballing reasons. Carlo Ancelotti, I love him, I’ve got big respect for him. I don’t want to go on into it now. It isn’t the time.

“It is not financial and it is nothing to do with Carlo. I love Carlo. I think he is a top guy and a top manager. I loved my time at Chelsea, I love the fans but it is a story for another day and I will tell it but now is not the time.”

Cole added: “I want to have a couple of weeks off, want to sort my future out as soon as possible, go on holiday with my family. Next season I want to have a fantastic season for England and whatever club I am at.

“The next contract I sign will be a footballing decision. I want to play in a more central position. I want a manager who has faith in me and I’m talking about club football here. It is a big decision for me and my family but I’m open to anything at the moment.

“I have purposely not spoken to anyone while I’ve been here because that wouldn’t be fair on England. My phone has been turned off but now I want to sort it all out.”

Seems that the Cole transfer saga is far from being concluded. If Cole had already agreed a switch to Arsenal, he wouldn’t have made these comments. He would just have avoided the question.  Perhaps he or his agents have spoken with Arsenal officials and liked what they heard but it’s highly unlikely any deal is as close as some had us believe last week given Cole’s comments yesterday.

Also, Cole clearly wants to be playing centrally. Would Arsene Wenger promise him a central role in the Gunners side? Would Cole play alongside Fabregas or maybe he is his replacement? Maybe Arsene is planning on selling our captain for £35m and replacing him with a freebie….now how would the Gunners faithful feel about that?! More penny pinching from the Arsenal, or a shrewd move?

As Cole himself states, he is ‘open to anything’. So Tottenham, City, Liverpool, amongst others must all be back in the race for his signature. I could see Redknapp playing Cole in the middle with Modric on the left and Bale at left back. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he ended up at White Hart Lane, it would simply come down to whether Spurs could afford him.

United declared they were out of the race last week, but that means very little these days. Fergie could still make a move for him. I wouldn’t discount Liverpool either, despite the uncertainty over their managerial situation. They would love to snap up an international for nothing (well not nothing, they would still have to fork out for a signing on fee and sky-high wages).

I just hope Joe Cole does sort his future out asap, and as an Arsenal fan i hope he comes to the Emirates. But it seems no deal is in place just yet.

Where do you think Joe Cole will be playing next season? Please leave your comments below…

i would like us to sign him but where would he fit in?

we have so many small(ish) creative ball players already : vela, cesc (?), arshavin, walcott, nasri, rosicky … and that is assuming edourdo leaves.

unless he replaces cesc as our central playmaker i cannot see him playing much more for us than he did for chelski.

providing cesc stays for another year (which he will) it is a dm cover we need or someone to play dm that will free-up song to be our utility player.

    and dm he isn’t.

why would he go to the Arse!
If as he states it is a footballing decision then he will probably want to win something and he will never do that at the new library!!!

Big- if you think he is not going to Arsenal because he will not win anything then whats the point of joining Tottenham. Tottenham are just as unlikely to win anything, which means he will join United.

Can’t imagine the lad joining us we’re not going to win things here he knows that and so do a lot of long suffering Gooners He ain’t gonna get the wages he’d require he knows it we know it. When we get a real football manager who’ll spend the cash on a few top quality players and not a scrooge bank manager we’ll begin to win things cos mark my words if we keep going as we’re going the Spuds will become Kings of North London…YUK!

Er let me think…. Oh yeah moving to a new shiny stadium and redeveloping a huge area of north London. And challenging for the title every year, yes challenging. Spurs mmm…. lurched from 1 self imposed crisis to another, Ramos, Jol, flirting with relegation whilst spending desperately to try and compete in some way. Your biggest achievement for decades is finishing fourth. We finish 3rd and get hammered, you finish fourth and get applauded; that tells the whole story really. Pathetic.

face it arsenal f***s, spurs have won a trophey more recently than you, and will win the next one before you, champions league final at wembley next season – it already writen for the blue & white, while you arsenal scum keep selling your best players to pay off your poxy library mortgage. COYS!

Big – One swallow does not make a summer fella. You did well last season but are still going to be at the mercy of Man City and there spending power this year. I predict a one season wonder for you boys and then back to mediocrity. Oh and didn’t your Stadium plans go up in smoke?????
Come back in ten years and argue your case then or as I imagine it, you will probably be arguing on the Championship forums by then.

Big- if it’s true and he wants to stay in London then there is going to be a problem he states he wants to play centrally so were would he fit in at Arsenal or Spurs. Spurs have Modric in that position who is a better player than Cole and Arsenal if he is staying has Fabregas who is a better player than Cole. I can only see Arsene going for him if he thinks Fabregas is going.

      June 28, 2010 at 4:19 pm

arsenal play with 5 midfielders, 3 central and 2 out wide who also act as attackers.
at the moment we have the anchor in song, the creative star in fabregas and then that sh*t waste of space diaby as the 3rd centre mid, joe cole would fit in perfectly in that position and would be of far more use than diaby.
LOL at the scum fans talking about spurs on the up, they are celebrating last season as one of their best in decades, arsenal fans lamented the season with disappointed and as a failure, yet who still finished higher?

tottenham forever in arsenal shadow, even their best year in decades and our worst in ages and we’re still the beter team.
lol at arsenal on the decline, last time i checked we were fighting for the premiership title up until april before we lost 7 of our first 11 to injuries, id like to see the scum loose their best players for the run in and still finish strongly.

To be honest i would have liked to see cole join us,but if it means losing cesc then id rather mr wenger stand strong and tell barca to stuff it. coles leaving chelski cause he knows hes going to be warming the bench next season, not good enough for chelski not good enough for us.

    June 28, 2010 at 11:13 pm

Arsenal dont need Joe Cole, he was a good player but he’s spent way too much time on the treatment table, he’s gonna be another Michael Owen. Arsenal dont need an injury prone player when they can have their pick of a younger, better and wage wise alot cheaper player so someone else please sign him.

ARSENAL IS THE TEAM AND ARSENAL HAD AN ABILITY TO WIN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AND PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE MY ADVICE TO COLE TO JOIN THE ARMOURY ARSENAL FC BECAUSE IT IS THE BEST COMBINATION TEAM FOR HIM BUT HE IS NOT THE REPLACEMANT OF KING FABBY BECAUSE FABBY IS THE FIRST CHOICE DEFENSIVE MID-FIELD PLAYER OF ARSENAL
