Wenger Rules Out Signing A Left Back But Will He Learn From His Mistakes?

Arsene Wenger has told Arsenal.com that he won’t be signing a left back this month, due to Kieran Gibbs returning to full training next week.

Arsene feels with the imminent return of Gibbs, and the fact Vermaelen and Sagna are also back to full fitness, he no longer requires cover at left back.  He told Arsenal.com:

“Gibbs is back in full training on Monday, and Vermaelen can [also] play left back and he is fit. [Andre] Santos will be fit in March,” he said.

“Three left backs, plus Sagna – who can play there – is four. We are not [shopping for a] left back.”

How predictable is this guy? I said at the start of the month not to believe the rumours and that we wouldn’t sign a left back. It was obvious that Wenger would just try and get by with what he had until Sagna and Gibbs returned. He was never going to bring someone in just to cover 3 or 4 weeks.

I have no problem with Arsene not buying a full back at this stage, there is no point bringing one in now. He’s missed the chance for a full back signing to make a difference.

But the boss set himself up for criticism when after the win against QPR on 31st December, he said the following to the Arsenal website:

“It would be stupid for us to drop points because we don’t have a left back.”

Well guess what Arsene, you didn’t bring in an emergency full back and we dropped nine points. My point here is, lets not make the same mistake twice. It’s clear we need another striker to support Van Persie and possibly even a creative midfielder now Jack’s suffered a set back, so go and bring in a couple of players before the window closes.

We don’t want to look back in 2 months and regret not bringing in reinforcements. It happened last January when we took a risk and didn’t sign a centre back and Vermaelen was subsequently ruled out for the season. Van Persie has carried the goal-scoring burden for long enough and Arteta and Ramsey have been over-played in midfield.

We need a striker and creative midfielder Arsene, learn from your mistakes and make it happen!

Wenger said selling Nasri and cesc would mean we are not ambitious. Guess what, we sold them. Wenger said it would be follish to drop points because we have no fullbacks and he was looking at loan options. Guess what, we didn’t and we dropped points. Read into it what you like, action speaks louder than words. Wenger no longer seems ambitious, doesn’t seem to care as much, we the fans should borrow a leaf from his book.

Wenger learn from his mistakes? Take a look back at the last the 6 years and tell me if that is a quality he possesses. You can’t learn from mistakes unless you acknowledge that you’ve made them.

well at least he can look in the mirror and recognise what he is. he said in december only a fool would risk losing the title because of his failure to sign a full back. since the window opened he has dropped 9 points in 3 matches, those 9 points would have seen us just 3 behind united and 1 behind spurs and clear from chelsea in 4th place………..AS WENGER SAID “ONLY A FOOL WOULD ALLOW THAT TO HAPPEN”

It’s like he think’s Gibbs’ injury was a one off, that he’ll be solid until the end of the season. The really shameful thing is, as Ray points out, us fans know he’ll be out of action for at least a month with 2 weeks of coming back.

How does Wenger not know this?

“You can look around at all the big clubs and who bought players? Nobody because you can’t find players at the moment who can strengthen big clubs.” -AW
Hello AW you cant see samba with your eyes ? Also we are spking abt our club issues , other clubs dnt strenghten coz they are already strong.
We need to loan or sell player to buy one in window. And AW cant sell squallichi or djourou or arshavin and buy samba ?
Lack of bench strength cost us injuries to playing 11 and which finally costs us points.
    Result:NO TROPHY , end of.

Let it not be said that I hate gibbs, but the truth is that gibbs is easily injured & cannot match up 2 physicality in games. You might still keep him,but we need 2 sign another CB as replacement for djourou & squillaci, mertersaker is okay, unless we wish 2 get a world class defender like puyol, then u may sell him as well. The CB will serve for rotation in defence & as a backup in case of injuries.

If Sagna plays as left back who is your right back Arsen?yes there may be no players available to strengthen big clubs but we are not any more in that bracket. In the past you have said we can be compared to Newcastle. They hv brought in a striker. Can do something similar ?

We lack quality 1st 11,we lack bench,n we lack depth…d team need massive overhaulin

Perhaps he classes Sagna, Jenkinson and Yennaris as our right backs and were not talking 1 fullback being injured it 4 fullbacks out injured who the hell do we bring in.

I wouldn’t pay over the odds for a left back in January who may take 3 months to settle and then we will have 4 left fullbacks including Vermealen and then you scream loan bridge from citeh or taiwo from Milan, bollocks you all moan were Arsenal we shouldn’t be signing second rate players full time or on loan saying we need top quality players then you want players who cant get into starting 11’s at their own clubs.

Ok i agree we need some new blood and get rid of the dead wood but its not as easy as you think, first you need to find a club who wants them then find a quality players to replace them before u sell without clubs like man city guzumping us and January is a massively inflated market.

Ok I will admit we need to sell Gibbs at the end of the year but only if we can bring in a experienced fullback from a top league who plays weekin weekout and is a full international otherwise stick with what we got or put Vermealen out there and buy a CB.

I think in defense we should sign a centre back after selling Squilaci bring in Vertonghen, play a back line of Sagna, Vertonghen, Kosielny, Vermealen and use Jenkinson, Djourou, Mertisacker, Gibbs and Santos as sub promoting Miquel and Yennaris.

In midfield let theo leave and sell arshavin bring in Erickson of Ajax and Shaqiri of Basel both can play wide or as the centre attacking midfielders in midfield that would leave us with Song, Coquline, Arteta, Ramsey, Wilshere, Erickson, Chamberlain and Shaqiri promoting Miyaichi and Aneke.

Upfront sell Chamakh and Bendtner and bring another striker of top quality as a statement of intent and get Joel Campbell back from loan and promote Afobe leaving us with RVP, Gervinho Park, Top Striker/Poacher ie Huntelaar, Campbell and Afobe.

I’ve only made three maybe four signings if we did buy a striker which would cost us 30 – 40 million and that before we sell anyone and you look at the strength and depth of our squad so we are still only 3 players away from being a force hard to stop

If we are going with youth that is fine by me, but play them ahead of the likes of Arshavin, Chamakh, Squillaci, Djourou!!! The likes of Yenneris, Coquelin, Frimpong, Chamberlain, Miyaichi, Afobe!!! These boys are hungry and talented!
