Arsenal Transfer News: Wenger Linked With Late Defender Move

The Sun are reporting that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is lining up a late move for Watford defender Adrian Mariappa, who’s valued at just over £2m by his club

As we enter the business end of the January transfer window, Arsenal fans are still hopeful Arsene Wenger will be making some late moves in the market.

However, i’m not sure how many Gooners will be overjoyed by the latest player to be linked with a move to the Emirates. after the Sun reported today that Wenger is lining up a last minute bid to snap up Watford defender Adrian Mariappa.

The report claims that Wenger will rival Newcastle for the signature of the 25-year-old, who can play either right-back or centre-back, after having him scouted during Watford’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Friday. Newcastle are said to have already had a £1.5m bid rejected, with Watford looking for just over £2m.

Mariappa played reasonably well against Spurs on Friday and has been a shining light in a disappointing season so far for Watford, but is he really the answer to Arsenal’s defensive problems? Unlikely.

He would be a squad player at best, and while i have no problem in improving the squad as a whole, i think Arsenal should be aiming a little higher than looking for bargains in the Championship.

How about concentrating on bringing in a striker instead Arsene?
