So close, yet so far for Arsenal tonight. Facing the task of overturning a 4-0 scoreline, the Gunners beat AC Milan 3-0 and almost pulled off the greatest Champions League comeback of all time.
We came flying out the box and got an early goal through the head of Laurent Koscielny before Thomas Rosicky made it 2-0 shortly after. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain burst through to win a penalty just before half time, which was converted by Robin van Persie to make it game on for the second half with Arsenal only needing one more goal to level the tie.
Early in the second half Arsenal got a golden opportunity to make it 4-0 when Gervinho’s shot was parried by Abbiati only to fall to the feet of RVP, you would put your house on the Dutchman scoring from all of 3 yards out but his cute chip was saved at point-blank range by the Milan keeper. We ran out of steam and the Italians saw the game out to progress 4-3 on aggregate.
A stunning effort from Arsenal, but Van Persie will be having nightmares about that miss for weeks. Watch video highlights here:
