Afternoon Gooners! Some interesting stuff emerging today about the potential signing of Lukas Podolski. The Evening Standard have reported that Arsenal are on the verge of announcing the £10.9m signing of the striker after he completed a medical at London Colney.

The report claims that Podolski was showed around the clubs facilities earlier this week before undergoing and subsequently passing a medical examination. With the £10.9m fee agreed, a medical passed and a four-year £100,000-a-week contract also agreed, the deal will be officially announced as early as next week, when his current club Cologne will confirm things at a press conference.

The transfer looks like it’s getting closer and closer doesn’t it? Reports have been rife for weeks now and players, managers and club officials have all passed comment on the potential deal, which are clear signs there is definite interest.

As i’m writing this article, i’m hearing Arsene has just denied reports that Podolski passed a medical earlier this week. When asked at his weekly press conference about the report, the Metro quote him as saying:

‘Nothing is done. No [he has not had a medical]. ‘We will not be big in the market a lot, quantity wise. We can only have 25 players in the squad.’

But the boss then hinted that the deal could still happen shortly:

‘The deal could happen soon, it could happen later…’. ‘The speed in which you do things is important, but at the end of the day it is always the player who makes the decision.’ Wenger continued.

So reading between the lines, i’m guessing this deal is very close. Of course Arsene was going to deny the reports. I wouldn’t expect anything different from him. But for him to go on to say “the deal could happen soon, it could happen later” is a sure sign we’re close. Wenger rarely comments on a player in this way, unless there is real interest and he’s close to tying things up.
