Gunners linked with yet another goalkeeper

handanovic

By Fab4.

Arsenal are interested in Slovenia goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, according to Sky Sports News. Arsene Wenger has been on the look out for a new No.1 following the unconvincing performances of Almunia and Fabianski last season and Handanovic joins an ever growing list of keepers to be linked with a move to the Emirates.

It has been understood that Arsenal were close to agreeing a deal for Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer, with a £4m fee mooted and The Cottagers said to be targeting Hulls Boaz Myhill as a replacement. But now Sky Sports reports that Wenger has turned his attention Udinese’s No.1 after being impressed by his performances at the World Cup, which included a narrow defeat to England.

Handanovic is a talented 25-year-old and has been in good form for both club and country in recent years, and it would take a size-able offer for Udinese to consider a sale.

The problem i have with this latest piece of transfer news is that Handanovic is being touted as a long-term option…something i don’t believe Wenger is looking for. Arsene is known to be a huge admirer of Wojciech Szczesny and sees him as a future Arsenal No.1. So why would he bring someone in who will only hinder Szczesny’s development?

I think it’s far more likely Wenger is looking for an experienced stopper, who is in his thirties who the youngsters at the Emirates can learn from and eventually replace in a couple of years. Arsenal have enough talented young goalkeepers so i don’t see this link to Handanovic coming to anything. Just my personal opinion. Feel free to provide yours.
