London Derby Fails To Ignite – Report & Video Highlights

Chelsea returned to Premier League action after their midweek heroics against Barcelona, as they drew 0-0 with Arsenal at the Emirates. Here’s a match report.

Chelsea returned to Premier League action after their midweek heroics against Barcelona, as they took on Arsenal at the Emirates.

With the team looking ahead to the second leg at the Nou Camp on Tuesday, Di Matteo made 8 changes to his team, with starts for Sturridge, Malouda, Romeu, Kalou, Betrand, Bosingwa and Torres.

The first half was a very even contest, with both teams having chances. Arsenal went close after a Theo Walcott ball picked out Robin Van Persie at the far post. Many would have put their house on him firing home from close range however he could only strike the post. Later Konchelny was found unmarked in the box but his header could only find the crossbar.

Chelsea had a penalty claim turned down, Kalou failing to stay in his feet after tussling with Arsenal’s Sagna. It was a very week claim to be honest. Chelsea defended superbly, Ryan Betrand was impressing with his searching runs and maturity. Cahill and Terry looking unbeatable.

Van Persie found space in the box but saw his strike saved by Cech towards the end of the first half, which ended goalless.

The second half began with both teams again breaking up play,  with little end product going forward. Van Persie had a few half chances including a left footed volley that was directed to the Chelsea fans in row Z. The Dutchman also had a penalty claim which was turned down by Mike Dean, after he tangled with the superb Cahill.

Despite the introduction of Juan Mata, Chelsea failed to supply the killer pass. Fernando Torres made committed runs but was isolated up front as the Blues tried to close the game out. Neither side could find the breakthrough and it finished 0-0. A good display from Chelsea on the whole, who will be praying for a defensive display like this on Tuesday.

Newcastle’s 3-0 win against Stoke means Chelsea sit in 6th place 4 points behind Newcastle who must be fancying themselves for the Champions League now.
