Chelsea produce miracle on sensational night

Chelsea produced a sensational performance to beat reigning champions Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate to reach the 2012 Champions League final. Match report here.

Well, where do I start in trying to explain an absolute thrilling, yet nerve racking game for all Chelsea fans? Chelsea had a daunting task against Barcelona last night. A 1-0 aggregate lead from the first leg gave the Blues hope, however a trip to the Nou camp to face Messi and co awaited them.

The Catalan giants started the night well, with their midfield diamond causing problems for Chelsea. However, the Blues showed their resilience despite Barcelona surging forward in numbers. Long balls up to the big man Didier Drogba looked to have been the only way out for Chelsea.

The game took a turn for the worse when Cahill stretched his hamstring in an attempt to stop Messi. He was replaced by Bosingwa. Shorty after the deadlock was broken, Alves controlling a Chelsea clearance before sliding in Isaac Cuenca who crossed for the unmarked Busquets to tap home from close range. Barca 1-0 up on the night.

Then came the games controversial moment and one John Terry will want to forget. In a second of absolute madness he planted his knee into the back of Sanchez off the ball. The ref missed it but his assistant made him aware of the incident and Terry was shown a straight red. Surely now there was no way back?!

Barcelona got a second minutes later when Meireles failed to clear the ball in the middle of the park, Barca capitalised, and Iniesta burst through the Chelsea make shift defence to slide the ball under Cech for 2-0.

Game over?! Not a chance. Chelsea produced the absolute unthinkable after a great Lampard ball for the chasing Ramires. The Brazilian controlled brilliantly before lobbing the ball over Valdes with an incredibly cool finish. Could it be Chelsea’s night?
The half finished 2-1. Chelsea where through on aggregate.

The second half began and Barca threatened constantly with wave after wave of attacking football. Chelsea defended for there lives.
There was some match winning saves from Cech and blocks from Ashley Cole and Ramires. Even Drogba getting back to head clear.

Barcelona where handed a lifeline after a Drogba foul on Fabregas in the box. However, a nervous looking Argentinian could only hit the crossbar from the spot as Chelsea survived. A massive relief and a new belief that the blues could do it.

Messi then cut inside only to fire a shot against Cechs post, it wasn’t his night. Barca were bombarding Chelsea’s defence with attack after attack, but they were looking frustrated. Torres was brought on for Drogba with 15 minutes remaining.

Barca continued to attack, Chelsea continued to defend. Bosingwa at centre back, Ramires at right back. Then with a split second a miracle occurred. The Blues cleared their lines and suddenly Torres was free in on goal, one-on-one with Valdes. Chelsea fans held their breath as Valdes came out of his goal, but the Spaniard kept his cool to round the keeper and slot home for 2-2. The roar from the Chelsea fans and bench was immense, and the celebrations were incredible.

Finally, Fernando had done the unthinkable, Chelsea had done the unthinkable. The final aggregate score ended Barcelona 2-3 Chelsea. Barca where beaten. Chelsea are in the final.

So what lies ahead for Roberto Di Matteo’s side? Bayern or Mourinho’s Madrid, whoever it is, bring it on!!
