Tottenham Hotspur have announced that manager, Harry Redknapp, has extended his contract. Redknapp’s current contract was due to expire at the end of 2011 but included an option for a two year extension which the North London club has chosen to exercise.

Redknapp, speaking to ESPN, is delighted that the club has chosen to extend his contract. He said “I am now committed to Spurs for the next three years, and of course I am pleased by that.”

The man dubbed “Harry Houdini”, led spurs to their Highest Premier League finish earning them a coveted Champions League Place. In the process, Redknapp was awarded the Barclays Premier League Manager of the year award. The 63 year old had previously stated that his current contract could have been his last before retiring. However, after a few words with son Jamie, he is hoping that he can emulate the success of 68 year old Sir Alex Ferguson.

“While I have the energy, I think I will carry on for as long as I can. I have changed my mind and I feel as though I have a good few years left me in yet. When you see how long Sir Alex Ferguson (68) has lasted, and then look around at some of the guys of the older generation that keep on going like Fabio Capello (64), Arsene Wenger (60) and Roy Hodgson (62), you think I could do the same. None of them are youngsters any more, they are of the same age group, and it is true that there is no substitute for experience in management.”

Redknapp took over from spurs in 2008. At the time, the club was wallowing in last place with only two points from their first eight matches. He managed to turn the clubs fortunes around, finishing in eighth and making the Carling Cup final which they lost on penalties to Manchester United. Spurs fan will be hoping that the clubs resurgence, under Harry Redknapp, can continue for the foreseeable future.

Will Harry Redknapp bring further success to spurs?
