Arsenal have opened talks with Ajax over the signing of Tottenham and Chelsea target Jan Vertonghen, according to the Daily Mail.

After completing the signing of German striker Lukas Podolski on Monday, it seems Arsene Wenger is keen to get another piece of transfer business done early as the Mail claim he has stepped up his interest in defender Vertonghen after opening talks with Ajax.

The Belgian will enter the final year of his contract this summer and the report claims that Arsenal will look to beat off competition from Tottenham and Chelsea to land the 25-year-old, who is valued at around £7m.

It’s believed that Wenger will try to offload Sebastien Squillaci and Johan Djourou in the summer in order to make way for Vertonghen, who is able to play at centre back, left back as well as in defensive midfield.

Wenger’s early moves in the transfer market may surprise some Arsenal fans, especially after last summers deadline day rush, but many are suggesting that the Gunners boss is sending out a message to club captain Robin van Persie and he hopes the early signs of strengthening the squad will persuade the Dutchman to sign a contract extension at the Emirates.
