Fabregas Should Be Backing Arsenal Not His Barca Mates

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has refused to be drawn on his future, instead taking a philosophical approach by saying ‘what will be will be’, whilst also claiming nothing more should be read into the Barca shirt incident other than a harmless prank.

Fabregas has been heavily linked with a return to Barcelona, where he spent 6 years as a youth player before Arsene Wenger persuaded him join Arsenal in 2003, and the Catalan club have made no secret of their desire to sign the Spanish midfielder and have already had a £29m offer turned down.

Rumours of a move were intensified after Barca defenders Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, along with Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, forced a Barcelona shirt on Cesc in-front of 200,000 people, as well as the worlds media, during Spain’s World Cup celebrations in Madrid on Monday night.

However, Fabregas has spoken out on the incident claiming he didn’t know it was going to happen and it was nothing but a simple practical joke.

“There are times we do not even know what we do, so everything can be forgiven,.

“Pepe took me there (to the front of the stage), the truth is that I didn’t know anything like that was going to happen and so I was a bit surprised.

“At first I thought it was a flag or something, but it’s nothing.

“You had to enjoy it and if it’s a way to have fun, it’s nothing.”

When asked about his future, Fabregas gave little away.

“I think now the less said about the subject much the better, because these things are worse for everyone when they come to light and people talk more about the matter,” added the 23-year-old.

“Right now we have to be very calm and what will be will be.”

I think it’s very easy for Cesc to say we should all just forget about it and it was harmless fun, but i think Puyol and Pique knew exactly what they were doing and showed a complete lack of respect for Arsenal FC. And as captain and a current employer of the club, i think Cesc should have said as much even if he didn’t mean it. A simple comment like “it was meant as a harmless joke, but i have told the lads it was in poor taste and they have told me that they meant no disrespect towards AFC and would like to apologise to everyone associated with Arsenal for any offense caused” would have done the trick.

But trying to shrug it off by saying ‘as long as it was fun its okay’ is simply naive. This ‘prank’ wasn’t done in the privacy of a hotel room it was done in front of 200,000 Spaniards and the whole world’s media, so it can’t be described as ‘nothing’ I’m afraid Cesc. You need to get hold of your ‘mates’ and let them know that kinda stuff isn’t on. Or you will completely alienate the Arsenal fans who have supported you for 7 years.

I felt sorry for him when i saw it, he looks embarrassed and i think he dealt with the situation at the time pretty well. He could hardly kick-off mid-celebrations or anything. So I’m not having a go, i just think he should be publicly supporting his current club more and not trying to brush the whole incident under the carpet without at least an apology to Arsenal and their fans.

    100% agree.
He has taken the side of his spanish/barca teammates.

It would be hard for him to criticise them when he has spent every day in the last 2 months with them, but as club captain of Arsenal he should have been thinking of Arsenal fans first not the feelings of his spanish/barca teammates and fans.

Fabregas shld go NOW. If I have my way, I will not let you go and still buy a better replacement and keep you on the bench throughout the season. Cant you see Torress wearing liverpool band? A captain for that matter. What has gone into your head? You have no excuse for wearing Barca shirt. Save me the story. Iam pained.

Fabregas is leaving. Let’s face it. A big team needs 5-6 big players, but everyone is always talking about Fabregas. He is just one player, we should concentrate on the rest.

Don’t vindicate their underhand scheming by getting upset about it lads. They want us to get all moody with him, so that he wants out. They’ve been doing it all summer and the best thing we can do to combat it is to ignore it.

Fab will go either this summer or next. Count on it. I’d just like to see as much effort made to develop a local talent rather than one snatch through a legal loop-hole, from another country.

I’d like to see a Londoner being picked as captain in future though, preferably an Arsenal fan since youth too. That being said I would like to have far more of such players in the team, whether captain or not; Gerrard could/should have gone a long time ago but he just couldn’t do it, Flamini regards himself as die-hard Arsenal but hung us out to dry at a second’s notice to warm the bench for the club he REALLY supports.

Shouldn’t have sold Upson, should have signed an English keeper, should develop Wilshire this season in the first team and perhaps look to him to be captain of the future.

Puyol and Pique intention in this was to do whatever it takes to drive a wedge between Cesc and Gooners.

This bedwetting article, along with many others, is helping to do Barcelona’s job for them – well done.

    Are you on their payroll?

Well that’s fine then, we should just let them do what they want and sit back and take it without a word?

exactly Shaun, wind ups only work if we react; smile in the face of adversity and it will have no power to offend.

I agree Shaun. It annoys me when I see were releasing Simpson and Gilbert and buying more foreign players.
Arsenal need more local talent in the side coz when the going gets tough the mercenaries get going!

don’t be stupid people, what was Fabregas supposed to do? take off the Barca Shirt and P#ss on it? it was of course a prank and whether he leaves or not, its got nothing to do with the shirt incident. grow the f#ck up and think, he might end up at Barca and he’s not gonna do anything to offend them but for now he is our captain, and he knows that. didn’t he just say that we’re a great Club? what more do you want from? for f#ck sake he just won the world cup, let him enjoy the moment, please excuse my language.

I said i thought he handled the ‘prank’ well, of course he wasn’t supposed to kick-off. But my problem is with his comments after the event, trying to brush it off as ‘nothing’.

He should have more respect on how his mates joke looked to Arsenal and its fans, and at least acknowledge the fact is was disrespectful.

and maybe thats why he is trying to brush it off man, probably realised that it might not have set well will Arsenal Fans, unfortunately the way most of us have responded will only encourage Barca players to continue unsettling him and we’re doing exactly what they want, Excuse my outburst earlier.

No worries. Yeah, i understand that by us Arsenal fans kickin-off about it all we’re probably not helping the situation. But I really think Fabregas should have acknowledged that it may have looked bad to Arsenal and its fans and made more effort to smooth things out.

I’ll stop being a brat the day fans like you stop being so naive. A ‘prank’ like that in today’s world can’t simply be laughed off as nothing, no matter whether it should be or not. There were millions of people watching, so of course it was going to be a big deal.

They should have done everyone a favour and done their joke in the privacy of a hotel room or something similar. Also, i’m not denying he was excited, and i said he acted well when the joke happened, but in his comments AFTER the event as Arsenals captain he should have made reference to how it could have been viewed by Arsenal and its fans. Simple.

this Fabregas talk should be rested. it is time we began to look out for a good replacement and move on. With 50quid from his sale we can secure more than three premiership tested midfielders, a CB and DM. Am sure Fab knows his future lies in Arsenal. he knows too that he has no place in the present Barca set up. he should also be told that Barca’s valuation is a way of not showing respect for who they claim they need.

Thanks for sharing N4, what a tw*t Pique is. I wasn’t impressed by Fabregas joining in with the laughing either TBH. Lets spit on old mens backs and laugh…how old are they?!
