Tottenham Favourites To Land £7m Demba Ba

By  Published: 30th May 2012

With the summer transfer window set to open, we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest transfer news involving Tottenham. Today sees Spurs linked with a move for Demba Ba.

Tottenham are lining up a £7m move for Newcastle United striker Demba Ba, according to the Telegraph.

Ba has only been at Newcastle for 12 months after making a free transfer move from West Ham last summer, but has been a huge hit on tyneside. The Senegal striker hit 15 goals last season to help guide the Geordies to a fifth place finish and secure Europa League football next season.

However, this impressive form has lead to interest from several clubs including Tottenham, and the Telegraph report that the North London outfit are clear favourites to land the striker and are ready to trigger the players release clause by submitting a £7m bid this summer.

The 26-year-old was touted for a move to White Hart Lane in January, when Harry Redknapp openly admitted his admiration for him, but with Louis Saha released and Spurs yet to seal a permanent deal for Emmanuel Adebayor, it seems Redknapp has turned his attention to Ba.

Jermaine Defoe is also unsettled and the Telegraph suggest the England forward may move on this summer paving the way for Marseille striker Loic Remy to come in and forge a new-look strike force alongside Ba.

The only stumbling block that may prevent the former Hoffenheim striker from joining Spurs are concerns over the players knee. Ba has been plagued by knee injuries in his career and even failed a medical ahead of a proposed move to Stoke back in 2011.

Mick I hope we keep Ba as much as you do, but I’m afraid you have got the rules wrong m8, a player can play for 3 clubs in a season, but not more than, and even if the rule was 2 clubs, its for a season and not a calender year.

Demba probably doesn’t want to go where they burn down and loot their own neighborhood for fun. Too much Burberry & Stella.

Would have done it in Newcastle if they could have found anything worth nicking or burning.

“The only stumbling block…..” – love it!
So naturally if Spurs want him then it’s a done deal – why?? Ah – he’ll get Champions League football instead of Europa – ooops, perhaps not!
Love the London-based sites and their arrogance / ignorance!

Your main problem is you have nothing to be arrogant about but have every rigt to be ignorant

  9. Colin says:

Another stumbling block, besides his knee, could well be the desire of NUFC to keep the player. spurs offer nothing that Newcastle can’t this coming season and have proved themselves to be very astute transfer negotiators. a problem for spurs could well be that the player is given an offer at his current club that is too good to refuse.

Surely he’d be better off playing in front of the bigger crowds at St James rather than those smaller Spurs crowds.

Yeah, cos we’re already finishing above you lot consistently in the league, even though we haven’t built our stadium yet. So we’re doing better than you on a smaller budget, with a brighter future round the corner. And your point is???

Why would it cost more than £7m? That’s what a release clause means you muppet. It’s put in by the player so that should he wish to join the interested club this is the amount his current club must accept.

     Reply
  14. Charlietoon says:

Wing Wizard it’s an odd one. We picked up Cabaye because of the exact same clause but then tried to buy some kid (another Taylor) last year, met his release clause and the club decided not to sell. It went to a tribunal and somehow they won. Dont know how, as we had met the release clause, but the selling club countered that that price we met was only set as the price at which we could approach and speak to the player not the price at which they had to sell him.

  15. COYS says:

Im a Spurs fan. Don’t blame Spurs for this article… Blame journalists. Have you seen how many players we’re supposedly buying/selling in the news yet no completed transfers yet? These articles are trash. For the record I was pulling for a third place finish for Spurs and a fourth for Newcastle this year. Hope both teams have another run at the big four scum next season.

I don’t see Liverpool as a big four anymore, Cheatskii are investing more and they seem to be investing wisely, with Hazard and Marin already confirmed buys. We need to act and act fast, the race will be on between, City, Utd, Arses, Cheatskii, Spurs, Newcastle, Liverpool (?), maybe Fulham and Aston Villa. To weaken teams below us shouldn’t be our aim, but to strengthen our own is a priority. 2013 is going to be a tough one…very tough!

  16. Catcher says:

I think this all started when Alan Pardue said he hopes the owner will hang onto this group of players, but Mike Ashley has proved to be a selling club director in the past so you will have to go through the same shit we do every closed season and have your players linked with every club in Europe and that is when Levy publicly states none of our best players will be leaving. Thats Journos for you

  17. Canadian Chris says:

Ba has been average since he returned from the Africa Cup. At that time people were talking about $20 million. Whata joke. He is a flash in the pan and I hope Spurs don’t buy him.
I would much prefer Berba back from United. He will be hungry to play..he will want to prove his point…$5 – $7 million?? Corluka and Kranjar pay for him
I think VDV will leave if the $12 million is correct. Pays for our new defender. Defoe will then be back on a regular basis. I would like to see Johnson come from City..he’s a great talent wasting away on the bench. Not sure how we fund him but we do have lots of players to sell!!
