Modric Next On Hit List As Fergie’s Summer Spending Set To Continue

With the summer transfer window now open, we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest transfer news. Today sees Manchester United linked with a double swoop on Tottenham and Everton.

Luka Modric

Manchester United will continue their summer spending with a double swoop for Tottenham’s Luka Modric and Everton’s Leighton Baines, according to the Mirror.

United have already agreed a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa for an initial £12m fee, that could rise to £17m depending on appearances and performance.

However, the Mirror report that Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to further strengthen his squad in a bid to wrestle back the Premier League title from rivals Manchester City next season, and top of his wish-list are long-term targets Baines and Modric.

Despite the arrival of Kagawa, Fergie is understood to still be keen on adding more creativity to his midfield and landing Modric remains a priority this summer. Tottenham will do all they can to resist United’s advances and may try and price the Manchester club out of a move, however the player has hinted he will consider his future after this summers European championships.

Left back is believed to be an area Fergie would like to add to and Baines is his number one target but United could be put off by Everton’s asking price for the player.

FT Verdict

United have long been linked with Baines and Modric and no doubt Fergie is interested in the pair, but it’s going to prove difficult to land either of them.

Everton won’t sell Baines on the cheap and i can’t see United paying what it will take to buy him. Same goes for Modric. Daniel Levy is a notoriously tough negotiator and won’t be bullied into selling the Croatian. There were rumours he turned down a £40m bid from Chelsea last summer, and there is no way Fergie will spend that kind of money on him.
