Man Utd Open Bidding With £22m Modric Offer

By on June 7, 2012

The summer transfer window is open and Football Talk will bring you all the latest transfer news. Today, Man Utd are linked with a move for Luka Modric.

Luka Modric

Manchester United are set to open the bidding for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric with a £22m offer, according to the Mirror.

The report claims that Sir Alex Ferguson is determined to land Modric this summer after tracking the Croatian midfielder for some time, and will test Tottenham’s resolve with an opening bid of £22m.

Modric tried to push through a move to Chelsea last summer but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy refused to play ball and forced the 26-year-old to remain at White Hart Lane.

However, the Mirror believe Tottenham’s failure to secure champions league football next season will result in the midfielder once again looking for a move and expect him to submit a transfer request at some point this summer, with Spurs unlikely to stand in his way for a second time.

United are ready to take advantage of the situation and understand they will have to pay more than their opening £22m bid, with Tottenham thought to want at least £30m for the midfielder.

FT Verdict

No doubt United want Modric and it’s plausible they would open the bidding low at £22m, but Spurs only wanting £30m!? The rumours were that Levy turned down £40m from Chelsea last summer, so there is no way they will accept £30m a year later.

Unfortunately for Tottenham fans, this could be a long summer as another Modric transfer saga seems a certainty. However, they can be safe in the knowledge they will get more than £30m if the player does leave.

Spurs are and have always been a selling club! You tend to buy carrick, berbatov and now modric knowing you will sell to united! Spurs are our feeder club in the prem!!! Fact!

I think it is very possible modric could be sold for 30 mil. The value of a palyer is based on the lenght of his current contract, how in demand he is, as well as the player own wishes. If modric only wants a transfer to man united, that will lower his value. if he leaves the door open to other teams it will increase his value. plus he has one year less on his contract, that will also decrease his value

I’m a United fan and I don’t want any more ex-Spurs players. Carrick has never been anything other than mediocre and Berbatov is an utter waste of space.

Spurs players have the wrong mentality. They have no guts, they aren’t winners.

Your comment is a true example of “what you wish for” both players were poached from Spurs by Old Red Nose and it was his judgement that they would fit into the Manure system, but they were not 100% success was that Spurs fault, I think not. With regard to the Modric transfer, Manure have no chance, if he leaves Spurs it will not be to another PL team, he will go abroad Spain, Italy or France, Also for more money £40m+,which is too much more than Manure can pay. Stop dreaming of buying Modric it will not happen. End of the matter!!!!

united need to focus on a holding midfielder. the only true holding players united have are carrick and fletcher ( with fletcher with long term illness) All the other midfielders are not really defensive minded

Modric is a gd player but if we are going to spend 20 to 30 mill on a player why not snijhder who is truly world class, if we got him last season even with all the injuries we would be premier champions now no doubt, so forget modric,

I think that we need to sign Modric so that we have two technically gifted midfielders in him and Kagawa. Then i think we should go for Kevin Prince Boateng as he has a big physical presence and can run the midfield.

Man United’s main problem has been the midfield. Carrick had a good season and in my opinion will lead the midfield next season, Scholes is getting on now at 37, Fletcher I don’t think will return due to his long term illness. Anderson needs to go he isn’t good enough and should be sold. Cleverley has got the potential but injuries hasn’t helped him but i feel he has a point to prove. Giggs, same with Scholes geeting on at 38, he’ll provide experience. Utd have reacted quickly to signing Kagawa, he looks a good talent. Modric would be a very good signing, them two will provide Utd’s answer so they can keep the pace with City. In other area’s another full back is needed right and left with Evra getting on himself at 31, Baines would be the man for me. Right back? Rafael in my opinion isn’t good enough. To be honest Phil Jones will probably be first choice right back next season. Utd also need another front man with Owen and Berbatov leaving Robert Lewandowski would be my choice to go in with the other 3 Rooney, Welbeck and Hernandez and then i feel City will need to maintain their season performance to keep their PL Crown, Because Utd will be stronger and hungry to win their crown back.

I have a feeling saf will not be buying another holding midfielder to play along side carrick. Kagawa fills the same void that modric does. Imagine, Kagawa, Cleverley, Scholes, Giggs, Carrick, Anderson(if he can ever maintain his form), plus another solid holding midfielder will give us plenty of depth. Out of all the names listed hte only true holding player is Carrick ( i dont believe fletcher would be back or the same form as prior years)

man utd needs a young holding midfilder better than modric ad that could be synider but his age is also worrying.

for united modric is at the top end of the age bracket fergie goes for, so i suspect £25mil would be the limit…don’t know what it is with spurs, they start showing some real class and potential then press the self destruct button!
