[Video] Highlights of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Performance vs France

By on June 13, 2012

Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was a surprise inclusion for England’s 1-1 draw with France in their Group D opener at the European championships on Monday.

The 18-year-old made the squad but was expected to be an impact sub at best. However, Roy Hodgson selected him ahead of Liverpool’s Stewart Downing on the left side of midfield to hand him his first competitive start in an England shirt.

The Oxe started well and put in an assured display before being replaced with about 10 minuted left. He showed some good footwork worked hard on his defensive duties as France dominated possession throughout. It was a shame he wasn’t used more effectively, as England more often than not opted to use a more ‘direct’ style of play but overall it was an encouraging start for Chamberlain.

Good solid performance but would prefer to see him behind the striker and Young on the left. He needs to be able to attack the Swedish defence nearer to goal.
