Wenger To Spend £42m On World Cup Trio?

Arsenal have been linked with a triple swoop on Dutch club Ajax after Italian based website Calcio News 24 claimed Arsene Wenger has offered £42m for Luis Suarez, Maarten Stekelenburg and Gregory Van der Wiel.

With Arsenal on the look-out for a new No.1 and Wenger’s first-choice Mark Schwarzer being priced out of a move by Fulham, he may turn to Stekelenburg who played in all of Holland’s seven World Cup matches. Even at 27-years of age, he has vast experience and personally i would love to see him between the sticks next year.

Van der Wiel was linked with a move to the Emirates a few weeks ago and Arsene is thought to be keen on the talented 22-year-old who predominantly plays at right-back but is just as comfortable in the centre of defence, so his versatility may be attractive to the Arsenal boss who has admitted he is keen to strengthen his defensive options.

But the signing of Suarez would be the most shocking to Gunners fans, but potentially the most exciting. A striker hasn’t been high on the priority list at the Emirates this summer but with the likely departure of Eduardo perhaps a vacancy has opened up? Some may suggest that void has already been filled with the free signing of Marouane Chamakh but maybe Wenger would like another option upfront this season, and he could do a lot worse than Suarez.

There is no doubt that if Wenger pulled this off it would be some amazing business for AFC, but i can’t see it happening myself. Certainly not £42m being spent on all three. The most unlikely would be Suarez, simply because he would cost over £20m and we have ample options going forward this year already.

Stekelenburg and Van der Wiel may be more realistic targets, but due to their impressive displays at the World Cup i wouldn’t be surprised if we are priced out of any moves. Van der Wiel was being touted at £15m at the start of the World Cup so would cost at least that now and Stekelenburg must surely be worth in excess of £10-£15m and i can’t see Wenger paying that for a goalkeeper.

On the other hand, Arsenal do have a great relationship with Ajax so you never know!!!
