Sigurdsson Off To London After Spurs Hijack £8m Deal

By  Published: 26th June 2012

Gylfi Sigurdsson

Tottenham appear to have hijacked Liverpool’s move to sign Hoffenheim’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, according to the Daily Mail.

The 22-year-old midfielder was all set to link up with former boss Brendan Rodgers at Anfield but the Mail claim Spurs have now jumped to the head of the queue and should complete the deal by the end of the week.

Sigurdsson spent a season on loan at Swansea last year and was a huge hit at the Liberty Stadium, scoring 7 goals in 19 appearances. He agreed to make that move permanent before backing out of the deal when Rodgers left the club to take up the hot-seat at Liverpool.

A deal was then agreed that would see the Icelandic international follow Rodgers to Anfield but it appears that Tottenham made a late move to snare the attacking midfielder from under the noses of their Premier League rivals.

The Mail report that Spurs made contact with Hoffenheim last week and agreed an £8m fee. The club then held talks with the player and have persuaded him to reject the move to Merseyside in favour of a move to North London.

It’s expected that the deal will be completed by the end of the week, with Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said to be furious about missing out on one of his key targets.

FT Verdict

Well who saw this one coming?! If true, Tottenham have certainly pulled off a major coupe here. Sigurdsson is an excellent talent and looks a real bargain at £8m.

To have persuaded the player to turn his back on a move to Liverpool and link up with his former boss takes some doing, especially given the fact Spurs don’t even have a manager at present. Great work from Daniel Levy, it has to be said.

Lets hope it’s true. if we can land vertonghen also we’ll be in good shape. I see levy has offloaded saha and nelsen. that’s the dif between levy and rednapp. Levy knows a good player and how to deal. rednapp just buys old farts and wastes money. this bloke will link up well with bale and VDV as well as provide a threat from outside the box.

spurs are nothing without redknap, he got you where u are today and without him you will be back to mediocrity.

Incorrect – we were already doing quite nicely (bar the ramos blip) before redknapp arrived….

Doodles you know very little about Spurs. A better manager would have come 2nd last year. Quality squad. This young Icelandic has the chance to be a star for Spurs. All Spurs need is a goal scorer. Top 4 finish this year, and who knows we may surprise a few with a better result.

Hijacked? Who? Sigurdsson? Nay, A budding talent like him was never going to be keen on joining an ancient-history club like Liverpool.

Considering spurs have a very strict wage structure I can only assume Liverpuddle offered him 20 or 30k a week if this comment is to be considered true…

I think liverpool fans are still living in the past after reading comments regarding spurs hijacking this deal. LFC fans say he is not good enough to join a historic club like LFC with great tradition and 18 league division trophies behind them. I mean who are u comparing this guy to. Barnes, Mcmahon, Houghton etc. Get over the past. Your just frustrated because LFC are a sinking ship.

    • David K. says:

Hahahah…mav are you really trying to compare Spurs to Liverpool?!!! Spurs is NOT 1/10th of what Liverpool is…and that is in ALL aspects of WHATEVER you may think of! Even though Liverpool won nothing for the next 10 years, Spurs would NEVER get an inch close to KOP greatness.

If billgates buys spurs we will sing everyone in the world. And every fan will have a million dollar in their pocket to attend the matches.

Spurs… really? I know Liverpool didn’t do too well last season, but to choose Tottenham over Liverpool shows that the Spurs are over-paying the lad. Hope he enjoys a season without any European play, oh and the possibility of those who made Tottenham a threat last season packing up and moving out cuz ol’ harry’s gone.

    • Mooresinho says:

UEFA cup actually dude. so he would be playing “European Play” as you call it.

Anyway, he hasnt signed yet so I dont know why you are getting so upset like a little baby.

      • BMW says:

my bad, I thought Tottenham got screwed out of European football last season.

P.S not upset “like a little baby” just a suprising decision from what had seemed a sure thing… no need to be a defensive jerk :)

Lolat this is time Tottenham Have been a better club in the league then Liverpool in the last 3 seasons, not talking about the history as we all know Liverpool were a fantastic club that were playing the best football in the world. .. as we all know that’s not the case now, Tottenham are gonna find it harder then Liverpool to sign big players as Tottenham are are not in the top four

     Reply
  13. dollar says:

Even though Liverpool ant in the top four they can still use the clubs name to get players,,, funny how you think Tottenham are buying there players with big wage packets, when in fact that is not the case, Liverpool club are paying Joe cole. A reportedly £115,000 a week lol so Liverpool as for man u and man city. Pay there players with big wages and that’s a fact and good luck to you cause if Tottenham could do it id want them to do it… So enough on Tottenham getting players off Liverpool cause we are buying them…. Tottenham are more of a attractive. Club for some

     Reply
  14. Mooresinho says:

quite pathetic some of the responses on here. Our team is better than your team, its like being at school. Liverpool were a great club and have been since the 70s, Spurs were a great club in the 60′s. so what now? Spurs are a more attractive club and better run club that Liverpool. Last season was an embarrassment for Liverpool on a PR level and footballing level (Suarez etc).

Spurs continue to embarrass themselves (Redknapp sacking) but still we are a much more attractive club than Liverpool at the moment!

What’s all the bickering about, as a neutral (Doncaster Rovers fan, what would I know about a big team, lol), I think that Liverpool and Spurs are both great clubs, but while you argue about who is more attractive a club for a middle tier player, the likes of City and Chelsea, Arsenal and United are busily signing all the truly good players this summer.
