Arsenal are set to make a £12m bid to sign Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, according to talkSPORT.

The report claims that despite Wojciech Szczesny cementing his position as number one at the Emirates, Arsene Wenger is keen to add long-term target Lloris to his squad to provide some much-needed competition to the Polish youngster.

Lloris has played over 140 games for Lyon since joining the club in 2008 and is captain of the national team, starting in all four of France’s matches at Euro 2012 this summer.

However, Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has recently admitted his goalkeeper will be allowed to leave if they receive a suitable offer. Quoted by talkSPORT, Aulas said:

“Lloris can go, but only for a decent price in relation to the market,”

The Gunners will face stiff competition for the 25-year-old’s services, with both AC Milan and Liverpool also thought to be monitoring his situation.

FT Verdict

Arsenal have been linked with Lloris in the past but i don’t think a move now makes a lot of sense to be honest. At 25, he still has the best years ahead of him and being No.1 for both club and country, he’s not likely to move to Arsenal and sit on the bench.

Szczesny is a superb young keeper and to replace him now would hugely dent his confidence, and it would be very un-Wenger-like to stifle the development of a youngster he has shown such belief in, so i really don’t see anything in this rumour. With Almunia gone and Fabianski likely to follow him, Arsenal will need a reliable number two this summer, but that man isn’t going to be Lloris.
