Arsenal got their hands on what will hopefully be their first of many trophies this season, winning the 2012 Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup on Saturday night.
A youthful side captained by Kieran Gibbs saw off Anderlecht 1-0 in the first game thanks to a Henri Lansbury effort, the England under 21 midfielder fired home from a Jenkinson cross in the 34th minute.
A more senior side that included the likes of Gervinho, Andre Santos, Johan Djourou and Francis Coquelin then played out a 1-1 draw with Southampton. The hosts took the lead after some slack defending allowed Jay Rodriguez to head home for 1-0. However, it didn’t take the Gunners long to equalise, when Gervinho fired home after showing some nice footwork in the area.
The draw meant the game went to penalties, despite Arsenal having already secured the Cup, youngster Ebecilio was the unlucky man to miss the final spot-kick as Southampton won the shoot-out 5-4.
