Chelsea are set to miss out on Brazilian full-back Maicon as he closes in on a switch to Real Madrid, according to the Metro.

The report claims the La Liga champions are close to securing a £6m deal with Inter Milan for Maicon, with Jose Mourinho’s side offering the 30-year-old a three-year deal worth £3.5m.

Chelsea have also been strongly linked with a move for the defender, who has just one year remaining on his current deal at the San Siro.

Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo has made strengthening the right-back spot his top priority this summer after Jose Bosingwa was released from the club and Paulo Ferreira also looks set to leave Stamford Bridge after being made available for transfer.

So far, Chelsea have failed in their attempts to sign a whole host of right backs with Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel, Borussia Dortmund’s Lukasz Piszczek, Lille’s Mathieu Debuchy and Manchester United youngster Rafael da Silva all linked in recent weeks.

It now seems Maicon can be added to that list with the Brazilian set for a move to Madrid after being told he can leave by Inter officials, who are keen to rejuvinate the Italians ageing squad. Lucio and Diego Forlan have already left the club while the Metro suggest they are also trying to offload Julio Cesar and Dejan Stankovic.
