Wenger – “I like the player but we didn’t approach him”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has denied rumours he was interested in signing Marseille winger Andre Ayew.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has denied rumours he was interested in signing Marseille winger Andre Ayew.

Ayew, son of Ghanaian legend Abedi Pele, has come to prominence ever since the 2010 World Cup when he was part of the Ghana team that reached the quarter-finals before losing out to Uruguay.

The Gunners’ boss admires the 21-year-old, but insists he has invested enough talent in that area, including Gervinho and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Wenger said:

“I like the player but we didn’t approach him. We have many wingers. We brought in Gervinho and we have Arshavin, Walcott and we brought in Oxlade-Chamberlain too.

“Ayew is a very talented player but in the middle we have a lot of players too. On Wednesday we have eight midfielders and we could have had Jack Wilshere too but he is injured.”
