Chelsea have had a £17m bid for striker Robert Lewandowski rejected by Borussia Dortmund, according to ESPN.

Roberto Di Matteo is looking to add a new striker to his ranks this summer following the departure of Didier Drogba and it seems the Polish hitman is on the Italians wish-list.

Lewandowski has become one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers after scoring 22 goals in 34 games to guide Dortmund to a league and cup double last season.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be monitoring the 23-year-old’s situation after making a personal scouting trip to watch him bag a hat-trick in last season’s German Cup final win over Bayern Munich, but faces stiff competition from Premier Legaue rivals Chelsea.

ESPN claim the Blues have seen a £17m bid rejected by the German outfit, who are understood to be holding out for a fee in excess of £20m.

The European champions have been mulling over a £35m move for Napoli’s Edinson Cavani, but a ‘source’ has told ESPN that some Chelsea officials don’t think the player would fit in to their formation, leading the European champions to make their move for Lewandowski.

“Chelsea have been offered Cavani, but not everybody at the club thinks he is the right player to suit their formation. The Polish centre-forward is the one the club bid for, but the offer was rejected.”

A source told ESPN

Both Chelsea and United have been boosted in their pursuit after Lewandowski revealed his desire to play in the Premier League:

“The Premier League is a league that I would like to play in, and I hope it happens sometime. Although I am happy at Dortmund, I always like to aspire to greater heights.”

Lewandowski is quoted as saying by ESPN

The striker is still contracted to Dortmund until 2014 but it’s believed the Bundesliga champions would be willing to cash in if a bid of over £20m was tabled.
