Arsenal are set to launch a move for highly-rated Southampton left back Luke Shaw, according to the Daily Mail.

The talented 17-year-old defender broke into the Saints first team last season, making his debut in January’s FA Cup tie against Millwall and is expected to make an impression in the Premier League this season after their promotion from the championship last term.

The Daily Mail claim Chelsea had a £4m bid for the starlet rejected earlier this summer, but now Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is ready to test Southampton’s resolve with an improved package after having the player scouted on several occasions including Sunday’s friendly defeat to Ajax.

Wenger has close ties with the South coast club after taking both Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from St Mary’s in recent years, and is hoping to use that strong relationship to negotiate a deal for Shaw.

The youngster has come through the Saints academy system and has already represented England at under-16 and under-17 level, and could be set to follow Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain in making the move to the Emirates.

However, European champions Chelsea could yet reignite their interest and come back in for Shaw, with Roberto Di Matteo keen to add more youth to his squad this summer.
