With the summer transfer window in full swing, Football Talk will be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer news throughout the summer. Today, Sir Alex Ferguson gives an update on RVP and Moura.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed Arsenal are trying to drum up interest in Robin van Persie while also giving his thoughts on missing out on Lucas Moura.
After United drew 0-0 with Barcelona on Wednesday night, Ferguson was quizzed on his progress in signing Van Persie after confirming in July he had submitted a bid for the 28-year-old striker.
While Fergie remains confident in landing the Dutchman ahead of Man City and Juventus, he revealed they are struggling to make any headway with the Gunners after making their offer. The Scot also hinted Arsenal are ready to sell their captain after claiming the Londoners are trying to negotiate with other clubs for the player. Quoted by Sky Sports News, Fergie said:
“We have made a bid and they (Arsenal) have been trying to negotiate with other clubs. We just have to persevere.
“Hopefully it will come our way. We are trying our best but there is no progress at this moment in time.
“I do not have a gut feeling on it at the moment, I must admit. We are not getting any breakthrough with Arsenal.
“It is difficult to say why they are operating this way. I do not know what their thoughts are because they are not giving anything away.”
Ferguson was then asked for his thoughts on missing out on Brazilian starlet Lucas Moura, after it emerged on Wednesday that PSG had agreed a €45million (£35.5m) deal with Sao Paulo, and the United boss didn’t hold back with his criticism of the French giants lavish spending despite the imminent introduction of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules.
“I find it quite amazing that a club can pay €45million for a 19-year-old boy.”
“To make a mark on everyone – to tell everyone that PSG are here – they have signed Thiago Silva from Milan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“They must have spent about £150m in the last month. As you know, the only deterrent to that is UEFA.
“In the conditions of European football, you don’t qualify for Europe by winning the league or coming second – you only get in by invitation.
“That’s where, hopefully, UEFA can have some power. When somebody’s paying £45m for a 19-year-old boy you have to say the game’s gone mad.”
