Liverpool look set to miss out on the signing of Clint Dempsey with the Fulham striker on the verge of joining Sunderland, according to the Daily Mail.

Dempsey enjoyed a superb season in west London last term, scoring an impressive 23 goals in 46 games.

Liverpool have been tracking the American for several months and held formal talks earlier in the summer but were unable to agree a deal with Fulham.

The speculation appeared to have turned the players head after he told boss Martin Jol he wanted to leave the club, and the 29-year-old was was subsequently dropped for Fulham’s first two league games of the season.

A move to Anfield looked increasingly unlikely after Fulham reported Liverpool to the FA, claiming they had ‘tapped up’ Dempsey this summer. At the time, Jol said:

‘His head was turned. That is the problem. There are always players who want to move, but they keep quiet. This was different. It would have been better if Liverpool followed up with a formal bid, but they didn’t, so until now there is no bid.’

Now it seems that Sunderland have taken advantage of the situation and the Daily Mail claim Martin O’Neill has offered the American attacker a way of Craven Cottage.

The Black Cats are believed to have met the players £8m asking price and Dempsey is so desperate to leave Fulham that he’s ready to move north, despite his desire to play champions league football.

A last ditch attempt by Liverpool to sign the player isn’t out of the question but with relations between the two clubs strained, it’s highly unlikely to say the least. With time running out before the window slams shut, a move to Sunderland appears to be Dempsey’s only option other than to beg Martin Jol for forgiveness.

U looking at it wrong! Dempsey played every game for fulham hence so many goals and he is 29 where as sturridge played much less also chipped in with goals and is much much younger can grow longer with us as a team! Go for Sturridge!

Jol will sell dempsey to Sunderland for £8M that is correct but he WON’T sell to Liverpool for that price. If LFC go for Dempsey Jol will want £10M and that is why BR is not approaching Fulham for this guy.He will not be coming to Anfield……

If Sunderland have signed Clint Dempsey I am massively disappointed. He, more than any other, was the player I hoped Brendan would sign. Martin O’Neill cannot believe his good fortune I’m sure. It’s no use buying a brand new piston for your car that doesn’t fit – much better to by an older one that fills the hole and drives the machine on! Sad, sad, sad!!

dempsey is the highest scoring midfield player in the prem since 2010 you idiot. has scored more from midfield than any forward for liverpool in that time

I have a simple question fellaz! What d hell is Borini playing? I fink we over rated him. He has alot of problems. Carrol is better than him if u ask me. Plz letz go for Dempsey, he is all we want. We have disappointed him, we ve’ caused him so much shame. So sorry Dempsey.

      August 29, 2012 at 8:47 am

How can you over-rate a player on like 3 performances? Rodgers is alternating a bit at the front to see what combination works best. Give Borini more chance, not just 3 games. Carroll has over 60 games and is still toss!
Dempsey would have been a great signing (I too wanted him at Anfield) but Sturridge is much younger and has enormous skill…

For the amount of money paid for Borini or Allen is OK but to say that Dempsey is worth less is just stupid! He has a lot of proven quality and I’ve watched every game he has played for the last 3 years for fulham and as an International Player. Where is there a drop off with his quality because of his age? All that matters is putting it in the net? Winning games!

    • Eoin

      August 29, 2012 at 8:42 am

It’s not stupid at all! Dempsey is 29 years old, and consequently has little or no sell on value. That’s why he is worth far less than Allen or Borini – they are far younger and have sell on value.

Yeah, so is Hendo, Carrol. vWhat resale value when ur crap ?

Jol is a liar, and an arrogant stubborn pr*@& that never sells his best players because he knows they are his job security. Dont ever suit up for that man again. Clint.

Clint Dempsey is not the type of player we want at our club.
    1) He doesn’t look like he will fit into the team.
    2) Do we really want a player that acts the way he has acted towards the situation. A bit too much like Andy Carroll in that manor, selfish and lazy.
    3) Don’t get me wrong he’s a great, great player, but what’s the point in bringing a player who wants to play Champions League football to a club in the Europa League. If we don’t grab that 4th place then who says he won’t be looking for a move to Champions League.

    • antfone

      August 29, 2012 at 8:04 am

      1. what suggests he wouldn’t fit into the team? he’s never had trouble fitting in under the 5 managers he’s had at fulham, in new england, or the US team. Thats rubbish.
      2. He’s absolutely nothing like carroll. He’s the furthest thing from selfish on the field and has never been known for being lazy. He’s somewhat of a work horse actually.
      3. The only reason he’s able to push for a move is because he’s in the last year of his contract and Fulham are risking losing him on a free. That situation repeating itself at Liverpool is all but impossible.

Liverpool are thin up front and in the goals department in general. Dempsey has scored more than any midfield player in England since 2010 and his goal scoring prowess would be welcomed at Anfield. You’re way off.

Spot on mate !!! What’s with these resale value. We get players for their service. If good u get your money’s worth. If useless, what resale value n money can these young prospect can generate ? Seriously! Are we going to make money with young Andy , Hendo and who not ? Dempsey will make good sense for the possessions n control in games that with him scoring goals to show for. We had great possessions before but where were we ? For current and now Dempsey is the best prospect !!! I’m with you on a hundred on this !!!

Spot on LiverpoolFC Boy. Dempsey is never going to cut it out at Anfield. Liverpool want players who are in the mould of Jamie Hoofer Carragher who is so technically-inept that he cannot dribble, pass, head or shoot a ball with any decent accuracy.

Jacob give borini a chance how can you not rate him he’s only played a couple of games.ngog was a stump he had loads of chances to produce something and he failed. Got to move Downing on 1cup goal and no assists last season not good enough.

Liverpool FC Boy are you serious? Dempsey fits into our scheme perfectly and B. Rogers said so. The only reason he is being the way he is, is because B. Rogers said he wanted Bempsey in Liverpool and Dempsey took him at his word. As far as lazy, he is quoted by many as being one of the hardest working players on the pitch

      August 29, 2012 at 1:25 pm

U sure know your football. than most blind follower.
I don’t see anyone better at LFC with the budget we have. Dempsey’s value for money. Screw the resale value. We still havew young n useless n struggling to get half the money. What resale value. We need goals to show for the effort of the team. What’s control n possession with zero goals ????

4get d fat dat dempsey is ashame of himself he is a good player more better than sturrage and add experience to our attack force pls BR go 4 dis guy.

    August 29, 2012 at 8:14 am

I am expecting a last minute offer from lfc
for a price much less than 10mil. At dead line day fullham can’t afford to keep a want away player who refused to play. Also think dempsy have more info about this so I dont see Sunderland move happening.

  19. Eoin

    August 29, 2012 at 8:47 am

If Dempsey refuses to sign for Sunderland and Liverpool make a late bid, Fulham will have to take it because he can leave on a free at the end of this season. Jol won’t have the final say on this – it’s a business decision, and he is not the Chairman. If I were in Liverpool’s top brass I would bid about £5M right on the deadline (subject to him not having signed for Sunderland already).

  20. fuwee

    August 29, 2012 at 11:11 am

Get Dempsey. We’ll see hiow stupid we were not signing him. He may be 29. We need instant reaction with goals. Isn’t Henderson Suarez (our best hope), Downing etc young prospects. What has Hendo done n how much was he ? Get young potentials n seelling value goes up when they are just young passengers in true fact. Waste 35m. on young with resale value ? How ? How is that relevant with young Carroll (still he is better than Hendo who incredibly managed to appear in this club, don’t know how ). Gerrard is still wanted by many club. When Dempsey goes pounding all the goals we need , he is all worth every penny even half the price in resale value he can generate. We dictate n created too many chances that weren’t put away. Imagine Barca’s possessions, but no goals to show for .!!! We were really that n we will have even more possession n contril . That’s all we’ll have but remain mid -table for all the control n possessions. Dempsey is the best prospect compared to any at the moment and he is hungry n desperate to join us n end his carreer on a high n best is it can be with us. How can we emberrass ourselves with our American owner having no shame from claiming securing n his fellow american pushing for a move to his club n ending up ignored after his efforts while th3e owner just watch he begging go in vain. That’s heartless American tradition or what ! He (Dempsey) is good and is one of you !!!

All I say guys is that luis suarez sould play attacking midfield with sterling and carrol as strikers.suarez is like messi, making sure the ball gets to the strikers.

Clint will be useful to the Reds if at all we also want to be in the score sheet frequently.

As usual, we suck at getting our players…hoepfully the newbies come bgood. So far Allen, Borini, Sahin, Assaidi look good. If Dempsey can join I think we have a good top-4 chance.
