Arsenal: Wenger eyes new signing

Arsene Wenger has come out and expressed his desire to sign a new central defender before the start of the premiership season.  Wenger, in an interview with Arsenal.com, added that there were ‘plenty of names’ on his radar.

Arsenal are struggling at the back having already lost the experienced trio of William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre and Sol Campbell. Laurent Koscielny, from Lorient, has been the only addition so far this summer. Even with the return of Johan Djourou, who missed most of last season with injury, Arsenal still only possess three recognised central defenders.

Wenger admitted that last season he required five central defenders and is hoping that he can bring in at least another one this summer. However, the Frenchman is doing well to keep his lips sealed as to who he is casting his eyes over.

“I wouldn’t like to give you any name,” he told the website.

“There are plenty of names that we consider and we analyse. We look at the financial possibilities and the technical potential. But it is impossible for me to come out with a name. We are still on the search because at the moment we only have three centre-backs and we have seen last season you needed five. I believe we need at least four because we have some other players who can fill in this position but overall we are still on the search.”

Plenty of high profile names have been linked with the North London club, including German pair Per Mertesacker and Serdar Tasci. The signing of Tasci seems unlikely, however, after Stuttgart sold Sami Khedira to Real Madrid today. It is believed that the German club are reluctant to sell another of their star players.

Who do you think Arsenal need at the back?
