Arsenal Player Ratings vs Manchester City: Per Shines For Gunners

By on September 23, 2012

Arsenal drew 1-1 with champions Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon. Here are player ratings from the game by our resident Arsenal fan ‘Lloyd the Gooner’.

per mertesacker

Mannone 6. Sorry Vito but that was not good enough. City’s main threat was in the air. He flapped at one corner which lead to the goal and was generally unconvincing. He just doesn’t look athletic enough.

Jenkinson 7. Would have been higher but for some poor distribution under pressure. This boy could develop into a TOP full back though. England would do well to ward off Finland with an early cap.

Gibbs 8. Dynamic throughout. He grows in confidence with every game and has a certain class about him.

Mertesacker 9. Maybe that mark is harsh, did you see a mistake? Will have reminded those old enough of the great Bobby Moore.

Koscielny 7. The goal moves him from a 6 which his general play deserved. But he was playing his first game for a while. Great attitude, a winner.

Arteta 7. Toure occasionally exposed his lack of physique and pace but he fills holes that other don’t.

Cazorla 7. Disappeared for a while in the second half but he was the creative hub as usual this season.

Diaby 7. Not his best game this season. However, Toure was only really an influence for City after Abou left the field.

Ramsey 8. His best game for Arsenal since the he was ‘Stoked’. He will never be quick but he showed that he could play and even dominate at this level. That will surprise some, including me. Prove the doubters wrong Aaron!

Podolski 6. Tried but wasn’t his day. But at least he works hard. He switched off for the City goal but then again the zonal marking did him as much as anything else.

Gervinho 6. His touch was generally off today. He looked up for it though and his pace and power are important elements in the team as a whole.

Subs

Theo– tried

Giroud – his aerial ability helped at the end.

I generally don’t really agree with your ratings, but I’ve read a few rating articles and this is the only one I completely agree with.

      Did you see the game?
Very fair ratings tho a little generous with Per …8.5, I think.
Agree about Jenkinson tho Diaby gave the ball away much more.
      Ramsey was top class.
Gervinho is just not good enough.
Must buy a proper goalie. Why do we just make do?

Though i might also dont agree with the some ratings especially for Jeks, he was outstanding, i still respect others opinion. There is no point in becoming abusive. It is uncalled for to use such language! How would you feel if others too heap insults for responding carelessly?

Didn`t see the match but from past showings Mannone is not the man for me, he`s too stiff and inflexible. We need another experienced keeper.

You didnt see the match but you think mannone wasnt very good! What a joke, for your and the authors information, he made a couple of very important saves to keep us in the match, and Carl jenkinson was fantastic for us today.

I don’t understand what mannone has to do to get a decent rating. He conceded 1 goal which was as much to do with bad defending as his error. To give him the same score as Gervinho is a joke. Mannone kept us in the game at times.

Hilarious how you buy into the zonal marking scapegoat like every other sheep on the internet. Arsenal have allowed exactly 3 goals this season. During those many minutes, there have been many set pieces, and Arsenal’s ‘zonal marking’ scheme has been found wanting only once. ONCE in over 450 minutes. Even if Poldi had not been ‘switched off’ as you claim, Lescott is just much taller than him–nothing he could do. Strange how people praise Bould out of one side of their mouth only to slag off his set piece strategies (which work!) out of the other.

Mannone made some decent saves today, most of them would be expected from a top class keeper. He was certainly at fault for the City goal and still is behind Szczesny in the pecking order for me. A decent keeper but not ‘special’ like Szczesny is. Well done to all the team today.

I admit if Mannone is going to come out for it then he should get it. But that cross was too high for any keeper to get. The defending was poor having 2 players near Lescott but not close on him.
If any keeper stayed on his line would not have saved it just inside of the post.
So my take is poor judgement by Mannone, not his fault for the goal.

Poor ratings. Mannone flapped at the corner but made a couple of top saves. Ramsey deserves 6 as he only had a couple of bright moments. Gervinho? He deserves 3 at best. He was p**s poor.

I think your ratings are a bit high across the board, but for the most part I agree with how you’ve rated the players relative to one another.

I think Mertesaker deserves man of the match, but I also think he got lucky on a number of occasions. What I mean by that is that while he cut out a number of balls, the passes were poor and on another he could have been beaten for a dangerous through ball. BUT maybe I am wrong. Maybe his positional instincts are just that good.

    oops, forgot the word “day”

    Should have read:
… on another *DAY* he could have been beaten…

Finally, some recognition for the BFG. I cringe everytime I hear a so-called “pundit” question his ability, choosing to focus more on his lack of pace and immobility rather than look at the positives in his positioning and calming presence.

Gervinho deserved a 4-5 for me. The chance at the end was his moment… And he missed it.

Seems about right as far as ratings go. Arsenal were certainly the dominate side for most of the match. They really controlled the midfield, but their main issue was in pushing forward. For what ever reason City really seemed content to sit back and defend, but they did a good job of keeping Arsenal stuck in midfield.

Rambo had a good game. Gerard like. But, playing himon the right unbalanced the team in my opinion. He tends to cut into the centre, hence colliding with teammates. Also, by moving into the centre too often he caused the attack to be lopsided; Podolski had to come into the centre and Ger to the right. Not ideal. After Diaby left, Ramsey played in his more natural position. But, the caveat is that Toure came into the game after Diaby left the field. Dangerous.
Overall great play by Arsenal to get a result from the most difficult away ground. Fanstastic job…..well done.

Our midfield dominated theirs. Did you see Santi hack down Toure? When you say that Cazorla is half of the man Toure is you mean literally.

All we needed was one decent finish form Gervinho, just one. So frustrating, he can blow passed any defender in the League, Kompany couldn’t handle him and that is saying a lot.

Per was the MOTM no question, you were too hard on Vito, he is doing better every game. If he could just grow another 10 cm or so in height.

We were the better team, and in their house no less. They looked like the visitors, happy with a point.

Ramsey deserved 3-5 rating, if the king is naked people should be honest & say it.Hype on him was high but he did nothing apart from the superb pass to Gervinho. He forgot his role which was to assist Jenkison. His defensive rate was zero & tried playing Santi role of popping everywhere. Even collided with one of player in positio he was not supposed to. Understand Prof need to play players with experience on big games but He & diaby should give way to AOC & Coquelin who performed their roles to perfection. Saints game the pace was good.

You were’t watching the same game as the rest of us then.
Ramsey put in a complete performance in attack and defence.
Suggest you go and put some clothes on, I can see right through your ignorance.
