Liverpool considered a shock move for former striker Fernando Torres in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The Spaniard made his name in the Premier League at Anfield after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2007, and he went on to become one of the most lethal strikers in the world after scoring 81 goals in 142 games for the Merseysiders.

After spending three and a half years at Anfield, he made a £50m move to Stamford Bridge in January 2011 but he has struggled to settle in West London and went 5 months without scoring towards the end of last season.

The Daily Mail claim Liverpool were ready to end the strikers Chelsea nightmare and were lining up a surprise reunion this summer. Former Reds director of football, Damien Comolli, had Torres down as a summer transfer target and had gone to great lengths to explore the possibility of re-signing the beleaguered hitman.

It’s reported that a senior member of the Liverpool squad begged Comolli to look into the possibility of signing Torres in February, and the Frenchman duly obliged.

Comolli flew to Florida to discuss summer transfer targets and the possibility of making a move for Torres with owners John W Henry and Tom Werner.

There were fears that the transfer would be difficult with Chelsea likely to command a huge transfer fee as well as owner Roman Abramovich being opposed to selling the Spanish international, but the possibility of making a move was still alive.

However, Comolli wasn’t given the chance to pursue the potential move as he was fired on April 12th, just two weeks before Torres scored against Barcelona to book Chelsea’s place in the champions league final.

Many pundits claim that goal saved his Chelsea career and the 28-year-old is now considered the focal point in Chelsea’s attack after the departure of Didier Dorgba and Roberto Di Matteo has brought in the likes of Eden Hazard and Oscar to supply the bullets for the former Madrid man.

It’s a case of what might have been. If Torres had failed to tuck away his chance at the Nou Camp, he may have found his Chelsea career came to an abrupt end this summer, and Liverpool may have been an unlikely destination.
