Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has identified La Liga duo Isco and Ander Herrera as potential long-term replacements for captain Steven Gerrard, according to the Daily Star.

32-year-old Gerrard has been at Anfield since 1987 and came through the Reds youth ranks before going on to make 591 appearances for the club.

He is expected to play-on for at least another two years but senior officials at Liverpool are keen to bring in his long-term replacement next summer and are drawing up a list of potential targets.

Topping Brendan Rodgers’ wish-list is Malaga star Isco, who has shot to prominence in recent months and put in a superb display during the clubs 3-0 champions league win over Zenit St Petersburg on Tuesday.

Liverpool know they will face stiff competition for the 20-year-old’s signature, especially if he continues to impress in Europe, and with Malaga in severe financial trouble they will be touting him around Europe’s top sides in order to drive the asking price up should they decide to cash in next summer.

Rodgers has a back-up in mind in case he’s priced out of a move for Isco and has sent scouts to run-the-rule over Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera. The 23-year-old was a stand-out performer during Bilbao’s impressive run to the Europa League final last year and would prove to be a cheaper alternative to the Malaga man.
