[Player Ratings] Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea: How Wenger’s Boys Got On…

By on October 1, 2012

Arsenal lost 2-1 to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, here are player ratings for Arsene Wenger’s men from our resident Arsenal fan ‘Lloyd the Gooner’.

For about 15 minutes of the 90 we looked like a team, the rest was all huff and puff. I thought we made Chelsea look better than they are by letting good players play. Chelsea worked harder than Arsenal, why? Here are my ratings:

Mannone 6. A ‘line’ keeper like all the current Arsenal no 1’s. He is not the answer. As for who is, jury is still out.

Jenkinson 7. Defended well. A couple of decent crosses criminally not attacked by the forwards.

Koscielny 5. At fault for both goals and frequently shaky. You could see Arsene’s logic in selecting the nimble Frenchman against the tricky Chelsea forwards but Mertesacker’s organisational skills were missed.

Vermaelen 7. Steady game but his drive going forward wasn’t as evident as usual.

Gibbs 8. Defended well and looked lively in attack. Certainly looked better than Cole.

Diaby . Not on long enough to give him a mark but his absence revealed what many feared that the midfield just isn’t athletic enough without him. The team struggles to get the ball from good sides like Chelsea. Diaby is vital to whole shape and balance and if he can’t play who can replace him? Defensively Coquelin and maybe Frimmy and hopefully the forward thrust by Jack Wishere.

Arteta 6. Ok again but needs legs alongside him.

Cazorla 7. Looked a little tired today. He kept going though and is a wonderful asset.

Ramsey 6. When he had opportunities to really make a difference during the game he fluffed his lines. It is good to see his energy though.

Gervinho 6. Part of the problem but also will have to be part of the solution. He has power and pace that must be harnessed for the benefit of the team. Nice goal.

Podolkski 6. As with Gervinho he will be useful when Arsene sorts out the midfield.

Subs

Oxlade –Chamberlain 6. Biggest impact came when he drove forward. He is an attacking midfielder in essence and when asked to win the ball and drop deep he just isn’t the same player. Looks a bit overweight to me and that can’t help his fitness.

Walcott 5. Yet more evidence that he is not a winger. Is 4-4-2 the answer to the midfield and Walcott problems?

Giroud 6. Patience still required but MUST find the net regularly in the league soon or the shadow of Chamakh will loom over him.

Vermaelen a 7? He gave away two bad free kicks just outside the box which resulted in two goals. The second one he was forced to give away because he was 30 yards out of position bombing forward.

Our central defenders had a day to forget, but who would have thought our fll backs wold be playing so well. That was the area most were wanting reinforcements before the season began.

Apart from two single bad moments in the game, I thought we were the equal of Chelsea. I know that is a big ‘apart from’ but seriously, on another day we could have won.

If Giroud is a six then Jenks and Gibbs must be forty plus!

Sadly replacing Mertesecker with Kos was with hindsight a very costly mistake, he tried to give Chelsea 3 goals but only managed 2. I can understand the reasoning, Per isn’t very mobile but it backfired, Kos has gone back to how he was when he first arrived. Diaby going off was also a major part in how we played. We were the form team, we had played the more difficult matches but it fell apart for various reasons. I was absolutely gutted. I also would like to see Walcott down the middle as a striker because he does not have any tricks in the box to be a winger.

Kos was good expect the free kicks that cost us 7 would have been fine.Ramsey 4 he had the energy but thats where it ends. His passing poor, tackling questionable, decision making suspect, tracking down the opponents wanting, distance coverage an A Mo Farah would have been proud of him but the problem was this was a football match he was just another Cygan. They say if you are going nowhere any road can take you there.

I was bitterly disappointed. The manager clearly disappointed me.

Why on earth would Wenger change a winning team? Why a million times did Wenger choose to play Koscielny ahead of Mertesacker? Why??????????????

Koscielny was rubbish. His atrocious defending cost us the game. The giant German is faaaaaaaaar better that him this season. I’m sure if he it was Mertesacker marking Torres, he would never have scored that goal

Then there’s Walcott. He’s always been deadly against Chelsea, since that goal against them in the Carling Cup final. Why did Wenger choose to start Ramsey instead of him? Okay, he was superb against City, but then, that was an away game and keeping possession was important, but this was a home game where attack was all that was expected, not conservatism. Then again, why did he not bring on Theo after Diaby had gone off injured?

Why does he continue to bench Giroud? He’s our best center-forward, and after scoring against Coventry, he was supposed to start the Chelsea game to build on that, instead of coming on late in the game with the pressure of salvaging at least a point in the game.

Change your tactics, Wenger, do not mess an already promising season this early!

Of course we are all devastatingly disappointed.
I was as optimistic as anyone going into this game…unusually for me.
At this level, football can be a game of small margins.Relative to the play and performance on the day the score reflected the game.
Koscielny and Ramsey were picked on form which sadly they could not maintain. On another day it’s not an OG but a corner and Giroud’s shot from a tight angle flies in.
When Steve Bould laid into them, it will have been what should have been and noy if only!

if Gervi a 6 (6 is all he deserved)
how can Mannone be one he did not have much to do and did not do it well

Carzorla lost more balls in the midfield today than anyone else – this week there no way he deserved a 7
